What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking highly motivated Electromechanical Technologists to join our Weapons Assembly Team. In this critical role, you will be at the forefront of national security and advanced weapons development, supporting hands-on, highly technical work that directly impacts the research, development, and qualification testing of some of the nation's most sophisticated weapon systems, including the B61-12, W80-4, W87-1, B61-13, W80-5, and W93.

You will perform detailed assembly and disassembly operations in a state-of-the-art lab environment, following strict safety and quality standards. You will lead and participate in work planning to control hazards and ensure safe execution. Your role will involve collaborating closely with engineers and scientists to support complex testing and production activities.

On any given day, you may be called on to:
  • Lead or participate in work planning to identify and control hazards (electrical, mechanical, thermal, chemical, radiological, explosive, etc.), ensuring tasks are executed using engineered, safe-by-design methods.
  • Develop and present your work plan to lab management during Readiness Reviews.
  • Perform detailed assembly and disassembly operations on new weapons designs within a state-of-the-art laboratory environment.
  • Plan and carry out complex tasks that require strict adherence to exacting standards and a disciplined, step-by-step assembly/disassembly process.
  • Provide assembly and field test support at Sandia's world-class environmental test facilities.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant will be required to work onsite in Albuquerque, NM, with occasional travel as needed..

Salary Range

$63,800 - $123,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • Associate's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, electronics engineering, computer/IT, electromechanical technology, or a related STEM field.; OR (4) years of relevant experience and/or achievements that demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of the job (in lieu of the degree).
  • Active DOE Q-level security clearance (or DOD equivalent), with the ability to obtain and maintain Sigma 15 access, which includes random polygraphs.


Qualifications We Desire

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, electronics engineering, computer/IT, electromechanical technology, or a related STEM field.
  • Experience operating and maintaining critical lab equipment such as overhead cranes, forklifts, hand and power tools, electrical meters, and other measurement instruments, including collaboration with facility and safety departments to support and improve lab systems.
  • Prior experience in nuclear weapon hardware assembly, testing, or related roles.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to write clear technical reports, maintain accurate records (such as assembly records, WP&C documentation, assembly/disassembly procedures, drawings, and technical work documents), and deliver effective presentations.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with technologists, engineers, and scientists.
  • Experience planning activity-level work and familiarity with Sandia's Work Planning & Control (WP&C) processes and engineered safety principles.
  • Knowledge and experience in the safe handling, inspection, assembly, and disassembly of explosive, radiological, and other hazardous components, including management of Sandia's Explosive Inventory System (EIS).
  • Experience handling ESD-sensitive electronic components and applying ESD controls and mitigations.
  • Familiarity with chemical procurement, storage, and usage, including management of Sandia's Chemical Information System (CIS).
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite, SharePoint, PDMLink, and PRIME.
  • Experience working with classified information, hardware, and accountable materials.
  • Demonstrated success in roles requiring concentration, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification or higher.


About Our Team

We are a dynamic team that directly supports and executes lab operations for the B61-12, W80-4, W87-1, B61-13, W80-5, and W93 weapon systems. Our mission includes Hardware Management, assembly and disassembly operations, and other systems support. We contribute directly to the research and development, design and engineering, experiments and qualification testing, design maturation, and production of these weapon systems. Our team coordinates both internally and externally to ensure that parts and components are developed and acquired, making certain that test assemblies are available to support development and qualification tests as well as other experiments.

Within the Assembly Team, we assemble, disassemble, test, and maintain test units during environmental, electrical, thermal, flight qualification tests, and other experiments. Across the organization, we plan a variety of work activities, develop and assist design, qualification, and test engineers with assembly and disassembly procedures, and perform hands-on work with hardware at both the component and system levels. Most of the work performed within 2331 is activity-level work that requires keen attention to detail, high standards of quality, and strict adherence to security and safety requirements.
