DESCRIPTION

Civil Engineer

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Civil Engineer to support the planning, design, and construction of District facilities and site improvements. This position provides technical guidance, reviews and certifies civil engineering designs, manages professional service contracts, and coordinates permitting for new construction and major renovations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in developing and reviewing Project Requirement Documents, including project scope, schedules, and interim housing requirements.
  • Perform complex civil engineering work for District facilities, including scope development, budget preparation, design review, and technical coordination.
  • Provide technical direction to District personnel, commissioned architects, and consulting engineers regarding District policies, standards, and site development guidelines.
  • Oversee civil design elements such as grading, paving, fencing, parking layouts, streets, storm drainage, sewer systems, and related site improvements.
  • Direct the preparation and review of scope documents, topographic surveys, design drawings, specifications, and other technical documents.
  • Obtain and manage contracts and task orders for civil engineering, land surveying, and related professional services.
  • Review plans and specifications for compliance with District standards, applicable codes, and project requirements. Identify conflicts with architectural and engineering features and recommend or direct revisions.
  • Develop and maintain civil engineering standards, guidelines, and specifications to support safety, quality, efficiency, and cost-effective construction and maintenance.
  • Direct and review site development feasibility studies and cost estimates for grading, street improvements, utilities, and other requirements associated with property acquisition and development.
  • Resolve civil engineering issues during construction and provide guidance to contractors, architects, engineers, construction inspectors, and other project personnel.
  • Provide professional certification of civil engineering designs and documents within applicable licensing requirements.
  • Coordinate with the City of Los Angeles and civil engineering consultants to obtain drawing approvals and permits for off-site improvements adjacent to District school sites. Work includes A-Permits and B-Permits for sidewalks, driveways, bus drop-offs, ADA curb ramps, and related improvements, including permit closeout.
  • Assist the Real Estate Department with legal descriptions, easements, parcel map updates, and closure of street vacations.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from a recognized college or university.
  • Minimum of eight years of full-time, paid professional civil design experience on commercial or public agency projects.
  • Experience using AutoCAD for design.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe, and related office software.
  • Valid California Professional Engineer license in Civil Engineering issued by the California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Civil engineering experience involving educational facilities.
