Description

Burns & McDonnell is seeking a Civil Engineer - Solid Waste with related environmental experience to add to our Environmental Services Global Practice's Environmental Engineering team in Kansas City (MO), Oklahoma City (OK), and Omaha (NE).

We are looking for a self-motivated and experienced engineer and civil designer to lead or support a wide variety of civil and environmental engineering designs for new projects, alterations, and redevelopments on a variety of projects in environmental engineering markets and contribute to implementing department strategy, vision, and culture.

The position offers the opportunity to practice in a variety of technical areas, including but not limited to:
  • Solid Waste - permitting, design, construction, and compliance support for solid waste infrastructure including monofills, landfills, transfer stations, material recovery facilities, etc.
  • Site/Civil - site grading and design, site stormwater modeling and design, design of other site utilities (water, wastewater, etc.), coal combustion residuals (CCR) project, dams and levees, etc.
  • Water Resources - riverine 1D and 2D modeling, floodplain permitting, stream bank stabilization, stream and wetland restoration, etc. The Staff Civil Engineer will work within our region's team to provide technical leadership and mentorship of early career team members, collaborate broadly to support our Environmental Services global practice, and will generally be responsible for the following:
  • Leading or supporting engineering teams to deliver well-coordinated, high-quality designs for civil or environmental engineering projects.
  • Coordinating and supporting all aspects of multidisciplinary projects with varying degrees of technical complexity.
  • Preparing documentation for design projects, including design criteria, technical letters, memorandums, reports, drawings, detailed design packages, and cost estimates.
  • Directing and reviewing work products prepared by early-career engineering staff.
  • Providing technical leadership and quality reviews aligned with experience.
  • Project management duties include executing the project scope, budget, schedule, quality, safety, and client expectations.
  • Establishing client relations and involvement with marketing, contractual, management, and design meetings.
  • Championing QA/QC procedures.
  • Executing internal personnel training.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil, Environmental, or Biological Engineering or related engineering degree from an ABET-accredited program.
  • 3 years minimum related professional environmental engineering experience (6 years preferred).
  • Previous consulting experience is strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D, ArcGIS, and technical area-specific programs. For example, water resources-focused candidates should demonstrate proficiency in additional software such as HEC-RAS 1D/2D, HEC-HMS, CivilStorm (or equivalent), etc.
  • PE license preferred.
  • Experience overseeing construction and an understanding of construction methods and procedures are highly preferred.
  • Project management or assistant project management experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of standard civil engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Self-motivation and the ability to self-manage and multi-task (write reports, analyze data, perform design tasks, etc.)
  • Strong problem-solving abilities, interpersonal skills, and ability to work within a team framework
  • Ability to travel and work in the field, up to 10%, as required.
