Purpose

The University of Texas at Austin is committed to upholding and enhancing security and safety through proactive and effective law enforcement and emergency management, along with strategic planning and management of campus security infrastructure. To achieve this, UT Austin seeks to hire a seasoned leader to serve as the Chief Security Officer to oversee the newly created University Security unit. The Chief Security Officer is a direct report and advisor to the President and is a key leader shaping the University's culture, attitude and environment of security.

Responsibilities
  • The Chief Security Officer (CSO) proactively organizes and builds the University's security culture, attitude, and environment to advance mission and priorities.
  • The CSO oversees the UT Austin University of Texas Police Department and Office of Emergency Management, two high-performing and mission-critical units. The CSO will also build and oversee strategic security infrastructure planning functions in coordination with other university leaders.
  • A member of the President's cabinet, the CSO will actively collaborate with leaders across the University and University System, coordinating resources and managing the effective implementation of security strategy.
  • As a leader of leaders, the CSO serves in a non-commissioned position with experience and credentials to oversee law enforcement, emergency management, security intelligence, security infrastructure and crisis management.


Required Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited degree-granting institution of higher education.
  • Advanced training in law enforcement or emergency management.
  • A minimum of twenty years of professional experience in a variety of roles of increasing complexity and responsibility.
  • Experience as a successful and effective leader in an organization related to security, including leading, building and cultivating teams.
  • Fluency in multiple security and safety domains, including law enforcement, emergency management, security technology, security infrastructure, and crisis management.
  • Experience building, managing, and allocating resources of all types, including human capital, financial capital, technology and equipment.
  • Must maintain eligibility to hold security clearances for a variety of agencies.


Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in advising on security infrastructure in existing built environments as well as new facilities.
  • Professional experiences in large, complex, multifaceted organizations, including in the public and private sectors.


Driving Required

This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).

Work Shift

Monday-Friday during standard business hours. Evening, weekend, and holiday hours are required as necessary to support emergency response, crisis management, special events, and other operational needs.

Employment Eligibility:

Retirement Plan Eligibility:
The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.

A criminal history background check will be required for finalist(s) under consideration for this position.
