Full Job Description
Lead high-quality patient care while supporting a diverse healthcare environment serving U.S. personnel, international staff, and local populations in Balad, Iraq. This role combines hands-on clinical practice with medical leadership, offering the opportunity to influence patient outcomes, clinical operations, and healthcare quality in a fast-paced setting. Location: Balad, Iraq Position Overview The Chief Medical Officer provides clinical leadership, operational oversight, and direct patient care for a multidisciplinary healthcare team supporting a military base healthcare program. This role is responsible for ensuring safe, effective, and compliant medical services while promoting high standards in patient care, clinical governance, emergency preparedness, and provider performance. Working closely with operational and clinical leadership, the Chief Medical Officer helps maintain continuity of care across acute, emergent, preventive, and occupational health services while supporting quality improvement initiatives and interdisciplinary collaboration. Key Responsibilities Provide clinical leadership and operational oversight for all medical services, including supervision and mentorship of physicians, advanced practice providers, surgeons, dentists, and clinical staff Lead quality assurance, peer review, infection prevention, patient safety, medical documentation, and clinical governance initiatives while supporting regulatory and accreditation standards Chair the Medical Executive Committee and oversee key clinical committees including credentialing, pharmacy and therapeutics, infection control, and peer review activities Deliver direct patient care including medical evaluations, diagnosis, treatment, preventive care, chronic and acute condition management, occupational health services, and follow-up care Coordinate patient referrals, medical evacuations, specialty consultations, and continuity of care with external healthcare partners and medical transport providers Support emergency preparedness activities, mass casualty response exercises, and operational readiness initiatives Participate in audits, leadership meetings, policy development, clinical protocol reviews, and ongoing process improvement efforts Maintain accurate electronic medical records and ensure compliance with organizational policies, clinical standards, and applicable healthcare regulations Qualifications Requirements & Qualifications MD or DO degree from an accredited U.S. medical school or equivalent international institution with completion of residency training in Family Practice, Internal Medicine, or Emergency Medicine Current unrestricted U.S. medical license with active DEA registration or equivalent authority to practice medicine Current BLS, ACLS, and ATLS certifications required Minimum of 5 years of post-residency clinical practice experience in the United States with direct patient care experience within the last 12 months Strong leadership experience overseeing multidisciplinary clinical teams, quality programs, and healthcare operations Proficiency with electronic medical records (EMR/EHR) systems and medical documentation standards Ability to meet credentialing, immunization, medical clearance, and organizational compliance requirements, including participation in emergency response and mass casualty activities Ability to relocate internationally and maintain a valid passport throughout assignment; must be able to meet physical demands including standing, walking, lifting up to 50 lbs., and working in a fast-paced clinical environment Preferred Qualifications Previous experience in military, government, remote site, or international healthcare environments Experience supporting emergency medicine, occupational health, or austere clinical operations Strong interdisciplinary collaboration and operational leadership experience Additional Information Compensation Disclaimer: Pay range is based on several factors and may vary in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
