Full Job Description

What We’re Looking For

As our Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) you will focus on the establishment and optimization of strategic and day-to-day insurer relationships supporting sales growth targets.

In this role, you will report to the President and work closely with the National CMO, Sales Leaders, and Operational Leaders across HUB Canada. This full-time regular position is based out of our Burnaby location and includes oversight of our Commercial Placement, Real Estate Underwriting, In-House Underwriting and Claims Divisions.

The CMO role is accountable for strategy, execution and review of HUB’s insurer relationships regionally with the goal of maximizing effectiveness of our partnerships.  The ideal candidate has a strong network of insurers, budgeting and forecasting experience, financial insurance acumen and strong people leadership.

Requirements

  • Minimum 10 years of P&C commercial insurance experience, with significant time in a brokerage or carrier environment

  • Minimum 5 to 7 years in a senior leadership role with direct accountability for team performance, financial results, and strategic planning

  • An established and active network of insurer and carrier relationships in the BC and broader Canadian market

  • Demonstrated experience in financial planning, contingent income analysis, and contract negotiation

  • Technical insurance contract review experience (DUAs, binding authorities, program agreements) is a strong asset

  • Experience with large commercial placement, specialty lines, or in-house underwriting programs is preferred

  • Familiarity with EPIC or comparable insurance broker management systems

  • Post-secondary education or commensurate professional experience

  • BC General Insurance License Level 2 (required)

  • Industry designation preferred: CAIB, CIP, FCIP, or CRM

  • Ability to travel regionally, nationally and internationally as required

  • Strong financial acumen and the ability to translate data into strategy and action

  • Exceptional relationship-building and negotiation skills — with both carriers and internal stakeholders

  • A collaborative style that earns credibility across sales, operations, and executive teams

  • A track record of managing competing priorities in a fast-paced, decentralized environment

  • Strategic mindset balanced with operational discipline — you can set direction and get things done

  • Passion for the industry and drive to challenge the status quo with innovative, practical solutions

Responsibilities

Carrier Strategy and Relationship Management
  • Lead and own the Coastal insurer relationship strategy — establishing, developing, and maintaining high-value partnerships with preferred carriers across all lines of business

  • Conduct regular business reviews with key carriers to drive mutual attainment of targets, reinforce service commitments, and identify opportunities for growth

  • Leverage the HUB brand to secure market-leading capacity, negotiate favourable terms, and cultivate new carrier and market relationships

  • Maintain a deep understanding of insurer appetite, competitive positioning, claims trends, and regional market dynamics to inform placement and strategy decisions

  • Collaborate with the National CMO and regional CMO peers to align on carrier strategy, national initiatives, and program development opportunities

Financial Accountability
  • Lead annual forecasting, planning, and reporting for carrier remuneration — including base commissions, contingent profit commissions, GSC agreements, and program administration fees

  • Review, analyze, and negotiate Contingent Profit Arrangements, GSC Agreements, and overriding commission structures; assess and manage HUB exposures within these agreements

  • Monitor monthly financial performance against targets and take corrective action as required; actively contribute to the Coastal budget process

Commercial Placement and Programs
  • Oversee Commercial Placement, Real Estate Underwriting, In-House Underwriting, and Claims Divisions — providing strategic direction while enabling a high-performance team culture

  • Lead the Critical Path renewal process for Top 200 accounts, ensuring appropriate coverage, competitive pricing, and carrier options are surfaced for the client account team

  • Support producers in complex and large account placements (new business and renewals), providing market intelligence and carrier access during the selling process

  • Identify and develop new product opportunities, enhancements, and programs in response to client needs, market shifts, and competitive positioning

People Leadership
  • Lead, develop, and inspire a high-performing team across Marketing, Placement, In-House Underwriting, and Claims — fostering a culture that attracts, retains, and grows talent

  • Model and reinforce HUB's core values and entrepreneurial culture across your divisions

  • Build succession depth and support career development for direct reports

Strategic Contribution
  • Serve as a key contributor to the Coastal Executive Management Team, shaping local growth strategy and supporting the broader HUB Canada strategic vision

  • Contribute to M&A due diligence and acquisition integration activities as required

  • Actively participate in industry and business communities to build HUB's profile and maintain a current, broad network of insurer and market contacts

  • Assess industry trends, regulatory developments, and target market shifts to develop marketing strategies focused on growth and client retention
