Job Description

The Fire Department, City of New York (FDNY), seeks a full-time Chief Inspector in the Bureau of Fire Prevention. Reporting directly to the Deputy Bureau Head, the successful candidate will: Oversee, coordinate, and administer fire protection inspections and inspection programs across all District Offices within the Bureau of Fire Prevention.Ensure all inspection activities are conducted in full compliance with applicable laws, codes, and departmental regulations, while promoting operational efficiency, accountability, and consistency in enforcement practices citywide.Provide strategic leadership and guidance in the execution of inspection initiatives, ensuring alignment with the Bureau's mission and public safety objectives.Manage personnel, resources, and workflows to support high-quality inspections and timely enforcement actions.Lead the development, revision, and implementation of policies and procedures governing District Office operations.Collaborate with executive staff and the Legal Department to ensure policies are legally sound, operationally practical, and consistent with industry best practices and organizational values.Foster a culture of professionalism, integrity, and continuous improvement within the District Organization, while maintaining accountability for performance standards and the effective delivery of fire prevention services to the public.

ADMINISTRATIVE FIRE PROTECTION - 1002H

Qualifications

1. Seven (7) years of full-time experience including two (2) years in a progressively responsible managerial or administrative capacity, in one or more of the following:

a. the manufacture or storage of explosives or flammables;
b. the development of safety standards for the manufacture or storage of such materials;
c. the inspection of premises where such materials are manufactured, stored or housed to detect potential fire and explosion hazards;
d. the design, installation, operation, repair and testing of sprinkler systems, standpipes, or other fire detection or fire extinguishing systems; or

2. Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" above. Education from an accredited college or technical institution with specialization in fire science technology, chemistry, physics or engineering may be substituted for the general experience requirement on the basis of one year of education (30 credits) for one year of experience. However, all candidates must have the two years managerial or administrative experience described above.

License Requirement: On the date of appointment as an Administrative Fire Protection Inspector, possession of a Driver License valid in the State of New York is required. Class 7 is not acceptable.
