The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Chief Ground Control Engineer to join our Mines Technical Services Team at Totten Mine in Sudbury. The role is a permanent position.

The Chief Ground Control Engineer supports mine execution of the Ground Control Program and Seismic Risk Management Plans at the mine. This role oversees all aspects of ground control duties at an underground mine. The role holder works with an effective ground control team, including Ground Control Engineers, Mine Technician/Technologists and/or Engineers in Training, to provide Ground Control Services to the mine operations.

Additionally, in this position you will:
  • Audit and analyze systems to ensure zero harm, meet/exceed production targets, and achieve cost and capital objectives.
  • Maintain safe and stable mine excavations in alignment with geotechnical standards, corporate policies, and legislation.
  • Update the annual Mine Design Package with input from site departments.
  • Provide daily technical support for Ground Control and Seismic Risk Management Programs and collaborate with mine-site technical teams.
  • Assess geomechanical risks in annual mine execution plans to optimize sequencing and layouts for safety and production.
  • Steward ore reserves and life-of-mine planning, including development of mining plans and ground support systems.
  • Utilize rock mechanics modeling tools (MAP3D, Rocscience, FLAC3D) and ground control instrumentation.
  • Support implementation of new processes and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Provide performance feedback, mentor team members, promote safe production behaviors, and address noncompliance when necessary.


About You

Education:
  • Undergraduate degree in Mining or Geotechnical Engineering (or related discipline).
  • Professional Engineer Designation (P.Eng.) required.


Experience:
  • A minimum of 8 years of experience in Underground Execution Technical Services.


Skills:
  • Knowledge of mining standards and guidance documents.
  • Underground mine design, mining technology, and high level of understanding of underground mining activities.
  • Knowledge of engineering planning software (Deswik) is recommended.
  • Strong people leadership skills, including mentoring and coaching skills
  • Strategic thinking and effective decision making.
