POSITION SUMMARYThe Chief Financial Officer is OrthoArizona's senior finance executive and a member of the executive leadership team. Reporting to the CEO and working closely with the physician Board, the CFO leads all financial strategy, planning, accounting, treasury, and financial reporting for a multi-specialty orthopedic practice operating nearly 30 clinic locations across the Phoenix metro area, two licensed ambulatory surgery centers, and ancillary services including MRI/CT imaging, physical therapy, pain management, and InstantOrtho urgent orthopedic care.
The CFO translates the practice's clinical and growth strategy into a sound financial plan, gives physician owners clear and timely insight into performance, and builds the finance function, controls, and systems needed to support continued growth.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESStrategy and Leadership- Strategic financial leadership: Partner with the CEO and Board to set long-range financial strategy, evaluate growth options, and align capital allocation with clinical and operational priorities.
- Board and owner reporting: Prepare and present monthly and quarterly financial results, forecasts, and key performance indicators to the CEO, Board, and physician shareholders in a clear, decision-ready format.
- Growth and transactions: Lead financial evaluation of de novo sites, practice acquisitions, provider recruitment, joint ventures, and strategic partnerships (including private equity or MSO proposals); direct due diligence, deal modeling, and post-close integration.
- Team leadership: Lead, develop, and hold accountable the finance and accounting team (e.g., Controller, accounting, and FP&A staff); build a scalable finance function as the practice grows.
Planning, Accounting, and Reporting- Budgeting and forecasting: Own the annual operating and capital budgets and rolling forecasts, including service-line, site-level, and provider-level P&Ls.
- Financial analysis: Deliver analysis of provider productivity (wRVUs, visits, cases), payer mix, cost per encounter, staffing ratios, and site profitability to inform operational decisions.
- Accounting and close: Oversee general ledger, accounts payable, fixed assets, and month-end close; ensure accurate, timely financial statements consistent with GAAP and the practice's reporting basis.
- Audit and tax: Manage the annual audit or review and tax compliance across all practice entities in coordination with outside CPA firms; advise on entity structure and tax planning.
Physician Economics and Revenue- Physician compensation and distributions: Administer and model physician and APP compensation plans, shareholder distributions, buy-ins/buy-outs, and associated reporting, in partnership with legal counsel to ensure consistency with the Stark Law and Anti-Kickback Statute.
- Revenue cycle partnership: Partner with the Chief of Revenue Cycle Management on revenue integrity, collections, and KPIs such as days in A/R, net collection rate, and denial rate; ensure revenue is accurately forecast and recognized.
- Payer contracting and reimbursement: Model fee schedules and contract proposals, support payer negotiations, and evaluate value-based, bundled-payment, and direct-to-employer arrangements.
- Ancillary and ASC performance: Oversee financial performance of the ambulatory surgery centers, imaging, therapy, and other ancillaries, including joint venture accounting and distributions.
Treasury, Risk, and Controls- Treasury and capital: Manage cash flow, banking relationships, credit facilities, debt covenants, and investment of reserves; lead capital planning for equipment, technology, and facility projects.
- Internal controls and compliance: Maintain strong internal controls, segregation of duties, and financial policies; partner with Compliance on audits, regulatory requirements, and fraud prevention.
- Insurance and risk: Partner with the practice's broker and leadership on property/casualty, malpractice, and other insurance programs, and on financial risk management.
- Payroll and benefits costs: Partner with Human Resources on payroll accounting, compensation budgets, and benefit plan cost and funding decisions.
- Systems and data: Oversee financial systems (GL/ERP, budgeting, and BI tools) and data integrity; partner with IT and operations to deliver reliable financial dashboards and reporting.
QUALIFICATIONSMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 10+ years of progressive finance and accounting experience, including 5+ years in a senior finance leadership role (CFO, VP Finance, or Controller) in a healthcare organization.
- Experience in a multi-site physician group, ambulatory surgery center, or comparable outpatient healthcare setting.
- Working knowledge of physician compensation models, payer reimbursement, and healthcare revenue cycle metrics.
- Strong command of GAAP, financial statement preparation, budgeting, and internal controls.
- Advanced financial modeling and Excel skills; experience with GL/ERP and BI reporting tools.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate complex financial information clearly to physicians, boards, and non-financial leaders.
- Proven leadership of finance teams and a track record of building processes that scale.
- Ability to travel locally to clinic and surgery center locations across the Phoenix metro area.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS- CPA and/or MBA.
- Orthopedic or musculoskeletal practice experience.
- Financial oversight of ASC, imaging, and therapy ancillaries, including joint ventures.
- Experience with practice acquisitions, private equity or MSO transactions, or physician group mergers.
- Familiarity with Stark Law and Anti-Kickback Statute considerations in physician compensation.
