Job Title: Chief Engineer

Department: Engineering

Reports To: General Manager

FLSA Status: Exempt

SUMMARY:

The Chief Engineer is responsible for ensuring the proper maintenance and upkeep of all physical aspects of the hotel, condo building, and grounds. The Chief Engineer will develop and implement a maintenance program that is cost-effective, efficient and meets the needs of the building's guests and staff. Develops and monitors the budget, forecasts, payroll, and legal aspects of the building concerning the engineering & facilities.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Manage a team of professionals, setting objectives, standards, guidelines, policies, and procedures. Ensures schedules of the team meet the needs of the building and are within budget guidelines.
  • Oversee the physical aspects of the hotel, including the building, equipment, and grounds.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive preventative and ongoing maintenance program for all facilities including lists of all equipment.
  • Respond to all maintenance requests in a timely fashion and ensure that all work is completed to a high standard.
  • Monitor and maintain the hotel's HVAC, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, kitchen equipment, life safety, laundry, and security systems to ensure they are functioning correctly.
  • Manage outside contractors and vendors for specialized services, such as landscaping or pest control. Responsible for negotiating all contracts.
  • Implement and maintain an energy management program to reduce utility costs and promote sustainability.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety and health regulations and maintain records of all inspections and repairs.
  • Develop and manage the annual budget for the Facilities department.
  • Develop a sustainability program with the internal team and external vendors.
  • Provide regular reports to General Manager on the status of all facilities.
  • Ensures all related permits, testing, and legal documents are kept up to date.
  • Administrative duties for the department include but are not limited to payroll, onboarding, hiring, scheduling, PTO approval, ordering supplies, maintaining records etc.


QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 5-7 years of experience in a Facilities/Engineering Director or similar role for a hotel or condo facility with at least 400 units.
  • Strong leadership skills, including the ability to manage a team and outside contractors.
  • Knowledge of HVAC, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, kitchen equipment, laundry, life safety and security systems.
  • Ability to develop and manage a budget.
  • Pre-opening experience preferred.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Strong computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office.


EDUCATION:
  • Bachelor's degree in Facilities Management, Engineering, or a related field (preferred).


LANGUAGE SKILLS:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and Spanish (preferred).
