Chief Engineer - JLL

What this job involves: As a Chief Engineer, Life Sciences at JLL, you will lead the strategic engineering vision for complex life sciences facilities, ensuring mission-critical environments operate at peak performance while supporting groundbreaking research and pharmaceutical manufacturing. This role requires deep expertise in specialized systems including laboratory HVAC, process utilities, and regulatory compliance frameworks that are essential to life sciences operations. You will serve as the primary technical authority for multi-million dollar facility portfolios, collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver innovative engineering solutions that advance our clients' scientific missions.

What your day-to-day will look like:
  • Lead comprehensive engineering assessments and develop strategic capital planning roadmaps for life sciences facilities ranging from research laboratories to manufacturing operations
  • Oversee critical system performance including HVAC validation, utility distribution networks, and environmental monitoring systems to ensure regulatory compliance
  • Collaborate with facility management teams, scientists, and external consultants to design and implement engineering solutions that support evolving research and production requirements
  • Manage complex engineering projects from conception through commissioning, ensuring deliverables meet stringent quality standards and timeline expectations
  • Conduct technical risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies for mission-critical infrastructure supporting pharmaceutical manufacturing, biotechnology research, and clinical laboratory operations
  • Mentor and develop engineering team members while fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement across all facility operations
  • Interface with senior leadership and client stakeholders to present technical recommendations, project updates, and strategic facility investment priorities


Required Qualifications:
  • At least 5 years of progressive engineering experience in life sciences, pharmaceutical, or biotechnology facility environments
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, or related engineering discipline
  • EPA Universal certification
  • Driver's license
  • Knowledge of HVAC systems, process utilities, and regulatory compliance frameworks specific to GMP and laboratory operations
  • Strong leadership experience with ability to mentor technical teams and drive cross-functional collaboration in complex organizational environments
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to present technical concepts to diverse audiences including senior executives and regulatory bodies


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with advanced life science technologies including continuous manufacturing, single-use systems, and automated process control systems
  • Previous consulting experience with multiple life sciences clients and demonstrated ability to develop long-term strategic partnerships
  • Experience with regulatory compliance requirements including FDA, EMA, and other global standards that govern life sciences facility operations


Location: San Diego, CA

Work Shift: M-F (7am to 4pm)

Estimated compensation for this position:

99,000.00 - 105,000.00 USD per year

This range is an estimate and actual compensation may differ. Final compensation packages are determined by various considerations including but not limited to candidate qualifications, location, market conditions, and internal considerations.
