The Chief Engineer is responsible for supervising and supporting the daily maintenance and repair of hotel facilities, systems, and equipment to ensure optimal performance, safety, and guest comfort. This role provides hands-on technical leadership across preventive maintenance, work order execution, life-safety readiness, and coordination with other departments. The Chief Engineer helps ensure compliance with all applicable codes, regulations, and collective bargaining agreements while maintaining Hyatt standards and operational uptime.

Key Responsibilities

Facilities & Maintenance Operations

  • Perform and/or oversee repairs and maintenance for guestrooms, public spaces, back-of-house areas, and building systems.
  • Support preventive maintenance programs for HVAC, electrical, plumbing, kitchen equipment, life-safety systems, and other critical infrastructure.
  • Respond promptly to service requests and guestroom maintenance calls; ensure high-quality workmanship and minimal disruption to guests.
  • Participate in room inspections and identify opportunities to improve reliability, energy performance, and asset condition.


Supervision & Team Support (Union Environment)

  • Provide day-to-day guidance and lead direction to engineering colleagues in accordance with union contract language and hotel policies.
  • Support shift coverage planning, task assignments, and effective handoffs between shifts.
  • Assist with onboarding and on-the-job training for tools, procedures, safety practices, and equipment operation.
  • Maintain professional, respectful labor relations and partner with leadership to ensure consistent contract compliance.


Life Safety, Compliance & Risk Management

  • Support hotel readiness for inspections and audits (fire/life safety, elevator, boiler, pool/spa if applicable, health department support, etc.).
  • Ensure adherence to safety standards including lockout/tagout, ladder safety, confined space awareness, PPE usage, and chemical handling.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of inspections, PM logs, incident reporting, and work order completion.
  • Assist with emergency response procedures, including after-hours on-call support as required.


Work Order Management & Coordination

  • Use the property work order system to document, prioritize, and close maintenance requests in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate with Housekeeping and Front Office to support room readiness, out-of-order tracking, and rapid resolution of defects.
  • Communicate effectively with Culinary/F&B, Banquets, and Stewarding to support equipment uptime and event execution.


Vendor & Project Support

  • Assist leadership with coordination of contractors and vendors, including escorting, access control, and quality checks.
  • Support small projects and refurbishments (painting, patching, light carpentry, fixture replacement) as assigned.
  • Help ensure proper storage, inventory control, and use of engineering tools, parts, and supplies.


This position an hour position with a pay compensation of $89.92 per hour.

• Minimum 5 years of hotel, commercial building, or facilities maintenance experience, including broad trade knowledge (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and general building maintenance).
• Demonstrated ability to lead work in a union environment and follow collective bargaining agreement requirements.
• Strong troubleshooting skills with ability to prioritize and respond effectively in a fast-paced, high-occupancy property.
• Working knowledge of preventive maintenance programs and work order systems.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends/holidays and participate in an on-call rotation.

Preferred Qualifications
• Trade certifications or licenses (e.g., HVAC/EPA, electrical, refrigeration, boiler/steam, building engineer credentials-based on local requirements).
• Experience in a large, high-rise, or luxury full-service hotel.
• Familiarity with life-safety systems (fire alarm panels, sprinklers, emergency generators, elevators-coordination and oversight).
• Strong understanding of energy management and sustainability best practices.
