Full Job Description
Scope of Service

The Endoscopy RN works collaboratively with the physician and the anesthesia provider and also monitors the patient during conscious sedation in order to determine patient needs during Endoscopic and GI procedures.

Endoscopy provides outpatient and inpatient services for pediatrics to adult patients over 18 years. The most frequent diagnoses are pain, bleeding, polyps, abnormal lab value, common bile duct stones, dysphagia, and pulmonary infiltrate. Procedures particular to this area include:
  • EGD
  • Colonoscopy
  • ERCP
  • Bronchoscopy
  • Manometry
  • 24 hour pH studies
  • 24 hour pH studies - Bravo capsule
  • Enteroscopy
  • Endoscopic Ultrasound

Endoscopy is a 6 procedure room, 1 out patient testing room unit which provides Endoscopic services for routinely scheduled inpatient and outpatient procedures, and urgent add-on procedures. Patients requiring a higher level of care (Intensive Care Unit) may be treated at the bedside. The average number of procedures is 20-30/day.

The hours of operation are Monday through Friday 7:00 am to 5:30 pm and Saturday and working holiday's 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. 24-hour emergency coverage is provided with an on-call RN and GI Technician.

I. JOB SUMMARY/RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager/Manager, assumes responsibility for coordinating patient care activities during assigned shift. Delegates and adjusts nursing care assignments for patient care populations based on patient care needs and available staff. Assures patient care is delivered based on the ANA Standards of Clinical Practice. Demonstrates effective communication techniques, care behaviors and organizational leadership skills.

II. TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Essential functions- Continuous: lifting up to ½ lb., seeing, hearing, talking, grasping, fingering. Frequent to continuous: standing, walking, stooping, forward reaching, handling. Frequent: pushing and pulling up to 30 psi, lifting up to 10 lbs., sitting, bending. Occasional to frequent: squatting, twisting. Occasional: pushing and pulling up to 70 psi; lifting: horizontal lift/carry up to 75 lbs. with assistance, floor to waist up to 35 lbs., waist to shoulder up to 25 lbs., overhead level up to 15 lbs.; carrying up to 35 lbs, running, climbing, side bending, kneeling, crouching, overhead reaching. Operates various machines/tools/work aids.

III. TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Inside work. Exposure to body fluids, blood products, and communicable diseases. Work environment may be highly stressful, fast paced and hectic. Assignment to inpatient adult psych areas and Family Treatment Center includes occasionally accompanying patients outdoors. Management of confused/disoriented and combative patients may involve tasks which may compromise physical safety.

IV. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A. Education/Certificates and Licensure:
1.Licensure: Registered Nurse, State of Hawaii.
2.Diploma or Associate Degree in Nursing; Bachelor's degree preferred, BSN highly preferred.
3.Current BLS/HCP card in all areas; ACLS, NALS and/or PALS in designated areas.
4.Ability to read, write, speak and understand English effectively.

B. Experience:
1.Two years of Acute Care experience.
2.Prior charge nurse experience.

C. Additional Requirements:
1.Exemplary record of past performance that demonstrates exceptional knowledge, skills, and abilities in carrying out registered nurse duties and responsibilities. A record that reflects exceptional attendance.
2.Ability to communicate and problem solve effectively with patients, nursing staff, physicians, and other medical staff.
3.Leadership and decision making skills that demonstrate the ability to: provide effective patient care; serve as a resource to nursing staff; maintain adherence to applicable statutes, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
4.Educational background that demonstrates an ongoing effort to maintain and improve one's
clinical competency as a registered nurse; and work experience that reflects an increasing level of responsibility over time, or the potential for handling an increased level of responsibility.

Additional Requirements for Experienced RN:

A. EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE:
  • Current ACLS certification.


B. EXPERIENCE:
  • Twelve (12) months of Telemetry RN experience required, preferably within the last three (3) years.
