GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

The Chairperson, Business performs executive, advanced professional work providing instructional leadership and administrative oversight for an array of disciplinary courses and programs at a comprehensive community college, including Accounting, Business Administration, Culinary Arts, Economics, Fashion Merchandising and Retail Management, Hospitality Management, Management, Marketing, Paralegal Studies, Small Business Management/Entrepreneurial Studies and Supply Chain and Logistics Management. The Chairperson, Business works collaboratively with faculty and staff and with the College's administrative team to provide a high-quality learning environment for students.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions:

  1. Establishes a collaborative working environment and fosters effective communications within the department, division, and campus.
  2. Provides a student-centered environment where students can express concerns and suggestions associated with the department and monitors student progression, retention, and completion to support student success.
  3. Hires, supervises, mentors and evaluates full- and part-time faculty and staff and supports ongoing professional development.
  4. Prepares reports and maintains records related to departmental activities, develops budget plans for the department, and oversees budget spending throughout the year.
  5. Determines the courses offered and assigns the associated faculty for each semester.
  6. Works with departmental faculty to develop and approve curricula, select textbooks, implement new instructional and support materials, and assign courses.
  7. Advises Division Dean on all matters pertaining to departmental facilities, curriculum, assessment outcomes, enrollment trends, and staff needs for use in short- and long-range planning for the Division.
  8. Oversees departmental assessment activities, including program learning outcomes and continuous improvement, implements changes as needed, and reports progress to Division Dean.
  9. Prepares grant funding proposals to supplement the existing budget when appropriate. Fosters the implementation and oversees the budget for all departmental grants.
  10. Works with departments that provide student services to efficiently deliver those services to students.
  11. Pursues cooperative agreements with area secondary schools and baccalaureate degree-granting institutions.
  12. Develops, maintains, and oversees community contacts, including departmental advisory committees, and fosters a collaborative learning environment for students in the department, including internship and apprenticeship opportunities for students in local and/or regional industries.
  13. Supports institutional accreditation process and program review activities.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree in one of the Business-related disciplines
  • Three (3) years' experience teaching at the college level
  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Doctoral degree in at least one of the departmental disciplines
  • Five (5) years' experience teaching at the college level

  • Three (3) years' administrative and supervisory experience


SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

SCHEDULE: Twelve (12)-month position, Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

RETIREMENT: Pension eligible

Any Middlesex College employee hired after September 1, 2011 will have to meet the New Jersey residency law requirement.
