Job Summary

As a CEMS Engineer, you will serve as a fleet technical owner for Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems across our Gas and Coal generation fleet. This role leads complex troubleshooting, system reliability improvements, capital upgrade support, and fleet standardization for probes, analyzers, sample systems, DAHS platforms, alarming, and related data systems. You will work closely with plant Operations, Environmental Services, vendors, and project teams to ensure CEMS equipment and data systems perform reliably and provide the accurate data needed for compliance reporting.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead complex troubleshooting and root-cause resolution for CEMS hardware, probes, sample systems, flow, opacity, mercury, particulate, analyzers, DAHS, and alarming issues spanning both computer/data systems and mechanical/chemical process systems.
  • Provide remote and on-site I&C support with installation, configuration, programming, troubleshooting, diagnosis, repair, and calibration of CEMS instrumentation and DAHS systems.
  • Serve as an I&C resource to single and multi-discipline project teams to evaluate and implement CEMS/DAHS project requirements, including capital upgrades and replacements.
  • Manage vendor and contractor relationships related to CEMS/DAHS design, installation, calibration, and maintenance services, equipment vendors, and software/services vendors.
  • Develop and maintain design basis documentation, standards, procedures, and fleet-wide CEMS standardization. Generate design basis updates and provide cost estimates for new or major CEMS/DAHS equipment replacements.
  • Support Environmental Services and plant operations personnel on technical matters related to CEMS/DAHS system function, configuration, performance, and regulatory implementation from the equipment and data systems side.
  • Interpret and follow applicable regulations, codes, and standards relevant to CEMS/DAHS systems.
  • Provide technical leadership for Part 60/75 compliance support activities including QA/QC programs, linearity, CGA, RATA support, and data validation from the system and equipment side.
  • Train and mentor plant and engineering personnel; create practical knowledge-transfer materials.
  • Identify systemic problems and implement solutions that improve reliability and reduce compliance risk from the equipment and data systems side.
  • Travel to generating stations as required.


WHAT YOU'LL DO

Technical Expertise: Possesses intermediate level knowledge and performs varied assignments with proficiency in the application of theory and analytical techniques to solve diverse problems and complete extensive analysis. Demonstrates competency in analytical techniques necessary to handle assignments of moderate complexity. (e.g., by dividing the problem into component steps, and performing the analysis necessary to complete each step). Exhibits ability to understand interrelationship between systems and component equipment. Demonstrate ability to analyze and recommend enhancements to business processes.

Leadership & Guidance: Coordinates work activities of others within the work group, department, or other corporate entity as necessary to complete routine activities. Performs routine engineering activity with minimum direction from higher-level employees. Follows policies, practices, standards and rules of the company and those regulations and procedures required by external agencies.Provides training and guidance to lower-level employees.

Planning & Organization Ability: Coordinates the development of input necessary to forecast costs for the routine projects, improvements requisitions, etc. Uses scheduling techniques (CPM, PERT, flow charts, etc.) for budget and planning activities. Initiates corrective action when project objectives are not being met.Problem Solving & Initiative: Resolves and initiates solutions to routine problems which usually require additional definition/clarification before analysis can begin. Demonstrates ability to identify problems that are beyond the normal routine. Demonstrates ability and desire to seek out opportunities and embrace new ideas and approaches.

Communication: Develops, reviews, or presents technical reports such as improvement requisitions, studies, and analyses in as clear, concise and effective fashion.

Interpersonal Skills: Is an active team member. Networks with peers inside and outside the AEP system. Identifies key stakeholders. Uses informal network to get things done. Resolves conflict, builds consensus.

Develops an understanding of utility regulation and financing.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

Based on education, experience, interview and internal equity, this opportunity will be filled at any title. For this posting, minimum requirements are stated at the lowest grade. Increased expectations are at the highest grade.

Engineer Sr. (grade 8): base salary = $99K - $128K

Engineer (mid-level) (grade 7): base salary = $88K - $109K

Has typically acquired a Bachelor's degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET* along with two or more years of related engineering experience.

Individuals with a Master's degree in engineering from an engineering program accredited by ABET* may be considered for entry into the organization at this level.

Individuals with a Bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology can satisfy this degree requirement, if they obtain a certified Professional Engineering (PE) license.

*ABET - Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.

Acceptable alternative is:

(1) a Bachelor's degree in engineering (non-ABET) plus a Master's degree or PhD in engineering from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor's program.

**VP or above may waive the requirement for a degree from a university with an Non ABET accredited program

Other Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology (ABET preferred), or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Progressive experience with CEMS, process analyzers, power plant I&C, or closely related systems.
  • Working knowledge of CEMS QA/QC practices and operational aspects of 40 CFR Part 60 and/or Part 75 (implementation and system side).
  • Demonstrated ability to independently troubleshoot complex hardware and data issues and communicate effectively with plant and corporate teams.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel periodically.

Knowledge and Skills
  • Strong knowledge, understanding, and application of process/industrial control and monitoring systems.
  • Strong knowledge of process instrumentation, including CEMS-specific equipment (e.g., gas analyzers, sampling systems, flow monitors, probes).
  • Background in interpreting and following applicable regulations, codes, and standards relevant to CEMS/DAHS systems.
  • Experience with DAHS configuration, administration, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with PLC configuration and design.
  • Experience with computer networking, Modbus, OPC, and other communications protocols, including the ability to troubleshoot issues; packet inspection experience is preferred.
  • Strong analytical skills (verbal and written) and comfortable conducting presentations and taking part in panel discussions.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret technical writings and drawings such as SAMA logic diagrams, flow diagrams, one-line diagrams, electrical elementary diagrams, wiring diagrams, and other schematics.
  • Experience developing CEMS/DAHS system specifications and technical documentation.
  • Experience with server management, thin clients, and computer-based instruments is strongly preferred.
  • Solid data analysis skills using Excel; SQL or similar tools are preferred for performance monitoring and investigations.
  • Familiarity with network concepts, protocols, and basic control-system cybersecurity is advantageous.
  • Clear communication skills across engineering, operations, and environmental teams.

Working Conditions
  • Primarily day shift with overtime as required.
  • Periodic travel (day trips and overnight stays, occasionally longer) to generating stations.
  • Indoor/outdoor work with exposure to heat, cold, noise, dust, fumes, and operating equipment.
  • Mandatory PPE at stations: hard hat, eye/hearing protection, steel-toed shoes with heels and non-slip soles.
  • Strict adherence to site-specific safety requirements.
