Description of JobThis position provides management, supervision, and direction for a large clinic or multiple professional skilled nursing care units for incarcerated inmates in either an outpatient clinic, infirmary, or specialized cell house setting. This position is responsible for, but not limited to, the following:
- Responsible and accountable 24 hours per day for the nursing management and administration of a clinical unit;
- Provide leadership and vision while supervising, organizing, and reviewing and evaluating the work (to include Performance Management Documents) of all assigned staff;
- Responsible for the hiring and recommending corrective and disciplinary action of all assigned staff;
- Assume responsibility for payroll, scheduling of Nurse III's, approves and monitors schedules for floor nurses and agency usage, and day-to-day operational activities;
- Ensure that assigned staff receives appropriate in-service education and training;
- Assist the Health Services Administrator and may function in that capacity in their absence;
- Responsible for liaison interface between the Clinical Unit and other DOC departments, other facilities, and outside agencies;
- Facilitate team building within the unit and between the Clinical Unit and other DOC departments;
- Responsible for budget, reporting, conflict resolution, inmate grievances, and maintaining a comprehensive inmate medical record;
- Responsible for maintaining the standards of care for the work unit;
- Directing and coordinating the timely reporting of statistical and quality assessment data;
- Perform as a resource person for all standards, including ACA, and is responsible for nursing components of accreditation;
- Review and monitor CQI compliance;
- Formulate and implement policies and procedures essential to promoting quality care;
- Responsible and accountable for ensuring staff compliance with all Life/Safety policies and procedures;
- May occasionally be required to participate in restraining an inmate for medical reasons;
- Attend training programs as assigned including 2 day self-defense to ensure self protection skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience providing medical care to an incarcerated population.
- At least two years of nursing supervisory experience. Supervision is exercising span and control over subordinate staff to include coaching, mentoring, daily monitoring, performance management (planning, reviewing and evaluating), resolving complaints/grievances at the informal level, responsibility for scheduling and leave approval, and providing input that could impact pay, status, or tenure;
- Professional experience as a registered nurse in a correctional environment;
- Experience supervising professional health care staff in an acute patient care environment.
