Job DescriptionThe Section of Hematology & Oncology at Boston Medical Center (BMC) and Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine are seeking a medical oncologist/hematologist as Cancer Genetics Clinical Director to provide physician leadership and clinical oversight for the Cancer Genetics Program and High-Risk Genetics Clinic. The Director will partner closely with a multi-disciplinary team and ambulatory leadership as a member of the Section of Hematology & Oncology to ensure the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based hereditary cancer risk assessment, genetic testing, and surveillance for patients referred. The Director will provide clinical and operational leadership for the program and supervise a team of Genetic Counselors (GCs). Candidates will provide consultation and follow up to patients referred to the High-Risk Genetics clinic as well as a patient panel with hematologic and/or oncologic disorders in the specialty of their choosing.
Key ResponsibilitiesClinical Leadership & Genetic Counselor Oversight
- Provide physician leadership and clinical oversight for a team of Genetic Counselors and the High- Risk Genetics Program.
- Provide consultation and clinical guidance for complex, atypical, or discordant genetic testing results.
- Provide expertise regarding hereditary cancer syndromes and testing.
High-Risk Cancer Clinic
- Lead weekly multidisciplinary High-Risk Cancer Clinic conference and provide physician input on complex cases.
- See patients in consultation and follow up referred to the High-Risk Cancer Clinic. Review patients with pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants, significant family histories, and elevated lifetime cancer risk.
- Guide screening, surveillance, and management recommendations using current evidence and nationally recognized guidelines
- Work in a multi-disciplinary team to facilitate appropriate advanced screening for patients followed in high-risk clinic
Program Operations & Development
- Participate in monthly Cancer Genetics Operations meetings with Genetic Counseling and ambulatory leadership to optimize clinical operations, standardize work flow and promote quality safety and regulatory compliance.
Education, Outreach & Collaboration
- Serve as a physician resource regarding germline testing, hereditary cancer risk, and complex genetic findings.
- Partner with the Genetic Counseling team to provide education to physicians, advanced practice providers, trainees and other referring clinicians.
- Lead and support community outreach to increase awareness of hereditary cancer risk, appropriate genetic testing, and referral pathways to the Hematology & Oncology Cancer Genetics Program.
- Promote multidisciplinary collaboration and continued growth of the Cancer Genetics and High-Risk Cancer programs.
Hematology & Oncology Faculty
- Participate fully as a hematologist/oncologist physician in the Section of Hematology & Oncology including patient care, education and research missions.
- Commitment to provide primary specialty care to a panel of hematology/oncology patients in addition to the high-risk genetics clinic.
- Maintain an active Hematology/Medical Oncology practice with an independent panel of patients outside of the Cancer Genetics and High-Risk Clinic, in addition to providing clinical care and leadership for patients seen within the Cancer Genetics program.
Required Skills- MD or equivalent medical degree required.
- Board Eligible or Board Certified in Medical Oncology required; Board Eligibility or Board Certification in Hematology preferred.
- Licensed or eligible for medical licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
- Clinical experience in cancer genetics, hereditary cancer syndromes, or a closely related field strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary clinical programs and collaborate effectively.
