The Department of Cellular and Physiological Sciences at The University of British Columbia (UBC) invites applications for a Canada Impact+ Emerging Leader in Health and Biotechnology, with focus in Multiparametric Physiologic Metabolism. The successful candidate will be appointed to a tenure-track faculty position.

The Canada Impact+ Emerging Leaders program is a one-time initiative designed to support institutions in attracting internationally based Early Career Researchers to Canada. Emerging Leaders will receive research funding and institutional supports to advance transformative research in Canada's strategic priority areas, build partnerships across sectors and borders, and translate their research into applications and impacts that benefit Canadians and the world. Canada Impact+ Emerging Leaders are six-year positions valued at $100,000 annually, renewable once for an additional six years, intended for exceptional emerging scholars who have the potential to lead in their fields. Applicants must be early-career researchers and be eligible to hold a full-time, tenure-stream appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor at UBC.

Under the Canada Impact+ Emerging Leaders program, nominees must be working and residing outside Canada when the Eddie Goldenberg Research Chairs of Canada award (https://www.canada.ca/en/impact-plus-chairs.html) is formally accepted (July 1st 2026). The Department of Cellular and Physiological Sciences (www.cellphys.ubc.ca), part of the UBC Faculty of Medicine, is internationally recognized for using diverse approaches and model systems to investigate the fundamental cellular and physiological mechanisms underlying human health and disease.

The Department is seeking an outstanding early-career basic and/or translational scientist with expertise in metabolism. We take a broad view of the field and welcome applications from individuals working on metabolism at, or across, different biological scales using diverse model systems and innovative approaches. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, cellular and molecular metabolism, metabolic regulation within and between organs/tissues, energy balance and homeostasis, nutrient sensing and signaling, hormonal, genetic, and environmental regulation of metabolism, inter-organ communication, systems physiology, metabolic adaptations across the lifespan, metabolic dysregulation in disease, and determinants of metabolic resilience.

The Department is located in the Life Sciences Institute (LSI), which is made up of over 80 primary investigators and research groups. The LSI, has outstanding space and core facilities and is a leader in interdisciplinary and innovative research aimed at understanding fundamental mechanisms of human health and environmental sustainability (www.lsi.ubc.ca). The Department and LSI are well positioned within the basic science and clinical communities and offer potential interactions with groups such as the Stem Cell Network of Canada, Genome BC, and the Metabolomics Consortium of British Columbia, as well as the Cellular and Regenerative Medicine Centre, Diabetes Research Group, Women's Health Research Institute, at BC Children's Hospital Research Institute.

The successful candidate will be expected to

• Develop an internationally recognized research program
• Attract and manage external funding for their research program
• Mentor postdoctoral fellows, graduate, and undergraduate students
• Contribute to the newly-developed undergraduate program www.cps.med.ubc.ca/undergraduate-program
• Contribute to a graduate program that is affiliated with our department
• Engage in service for the department, faculty, and university affiliated with the Department of Cellular and Physiological Sciences, as well as the greater academic and scientific community

Required Qualifications

Candidates must have:

• A PhD, MD/PhD, MD or equivalent in the biological or biomedical sciences, as part of the UBC requirement.
• A developing record of research excellence.
• A strong commitment to excellence in teaching.
• Demonstrated a willingness to respect diverse perspectives and skills related to respect, equity, diversity and inclusion.

The expected salary for this position is $150,000 per annum.
