Job Summary
The Business Development Officer is a key revenue-generating role within Flagstar's Business Banking division, responsible for the acquisition of new client relationships within the $10M-$50M annual revenue segment. This role operates within a collaborative pod structure alongside a Relationship Manager (RM) and Business Banking Specialist (BBS), ensuring a seamless client experience from prospecting through onboarding and long-term servicing.

The BDO serves as the front line of growth for the bank-identifying, qualifying, and converting new business opportunities while representing Flagstar's brand and capabilities in the marketplace.

Job Responsibilities:

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

New Client Acquisition & Prospecting
  • Proactively identify, source, and pursue new business banking relationships within the $10M-$50M revenue segment
  • Develop and execute a disciplined prospecting strategy leveraging market intelligence, referral networks, and centers of influence (COIs)
  • Build and maintain a robust pipeline of qualified opportunities through consistent outreach, networking, and community engagement
  • Represent Flagstar Bank at industry conferences, networking events, and professional associations to build brand awareness and generate leads

Sales Execution & Pipeline Management
  • Manage the full business development lifecycle from initial contact through proposal delivery and commitment
  • Prepare and deliver compelling presentations and proposals tailored to prospect needs
  • Negotiate terms on straightforward credit requests and coordinate with the Relationship Manager on more complex structures
  • Maintain accurate and timely pipeline reporting within the CRM platform, including activity tracking, forecasting, and conversion metrics

Credit & Financial Solutions
  • Originate and structure smaller, straightforward credit requests (e.g., lines of credit, term loans, owner-occupied real estate) within established parameters
  • Analyze prospect financial statements and assess credit fit to determine alignment with Flagstar's risk appetite
  • Partner with the Relationship Manager to transition complex credit structures and ensure seamless handoff
  • Position the full suite of Flagstar products including deposits, treasury management, payments, and merchant services

Collaboration & Pod Partnership
  • Operate as an integral member of the Business Banking pod (BDO + RM + BBS), ensuring coordinated client coverage and communication
  • Facilitate warm handoffs of newly acquired clients to the Relationship Manager and Business Banking Specialist for onboarding and ongoing servicing
  • Collaborate with internal product partners including Treasury Management, Payments, Wealth Management, and Commercial Real Estate to deliver comprehensive solutions
  • Share market intelligence and competitive insights with the pod and broader Business Banking leadership

Market Intelligence & Strategy
  • Monitor market trends, competitor activity, and industry developments within assigned markets
  • Identify high-value growth opportunities and recommend strategic pursuit decisions to leadership
  • Contribute to the development of go-to-market strategies and segment-specific campaigns
  • Provide regular market feedback to inform product development and pricing decisions

Risk Management & Compliance
  • Adhere to all bank policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements in the execution of business development activities
  • Demonstrate sound judgment in assessing and mitigating risk across all client interactions
  • Ensure all prospect and client interactions are documented in accordance with compliance standards
  • Support the bank's Enterprise Risk Management framework through proactive identification of potential risks


  • Uses independent judgement and discretion to make decisions

ADDITIONAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Performs special projects, and additional duties and responsibilities as required.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Required Qualifications:
  • Education level required: High School / High School Equivalency (GED, HiSET, TASC) / Foreign Equivalent
  • Minimum experience required: 6+ Years of experience in commercial/business banking, business development, or relationship-based sales
  • Demonstrated track record of sourcing, qualifying, and originating new commercial client relationships
  • Working knowledge of commercial lending products, deposit solutions, and treasury management services
  • Strong communication, presentation, and relationship-building skills
  • Proficiency with CRM platforms and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to travel within assigned markets as needed


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Education level preferred: Undergraduate Degree (4 years or equivalent) in Business, Finance, Account, or some other related field
  • Experience in business banking or commercial banking with a focus on the $10M-$50M client segment
  • Formal credit training or underwriting experience
  • Established network of centers of influence, sponsors, and referral sources within target markets
  • Experience working within a team-based or pod coverage model
  • Knowledge of treasury management, payments, and cash management solutions
  • Advanced consultative selling skills with the ability to diagnose client needs and deliver tailored financial solutions
