Full Job Description

About the role

AI, politics, private credit, supply shocks, and other global forces are upending the world of business and finance, reordering how money moves around the globe.

We're looking for an unbeatable reporter to break big stories on the bleeding edge of Wall Street - private investing, hedge funds, banking, prediction markets, and private equity.

This is a big-game-hunting role where you won't be asked to match stories readily available on the internet. Instead, you'll follow your sources to memorable scoops and places where other reporters aren't going. In addition to breaking news, you'll write reported columns and views that actually say something - smart, original takes that help our readers understand what's really happening and why it matters. You'll take swings at stories that need more time, conduct high-profile interviews with some of the most powerful people in global business and finance, and bring your unique voice to Semafor's briefings, live journalism, and shows, as well as on TV, podcasts, and other media appearances.

Responsibilities
  • Help lead the expansion of Semafor business from a twice-weekly business and finance briefing to a daily must-read
  • Break significant, agenda-setting stories on the business and finance beat - private credit, hedge funds, private equity, M&A, activism, banking, and the political and geopolitical forces reshaping the world of business and capital markets
  • Write reported columns and analytical pieces with real point of view for a sophisticated audience of executives, investors, and decision-makers
  • Work closely with Semafor colleagues across the global newsroom
  • Develop and maintain deep, senior-level sources across Wall Street, financial institutions, and the regulatory and political ecosystem around capital markets
  • Appear on TV, podcasts, and Semafor's marquee live journalism, where you'll host on-the-record interviews with the most senior business and finance leaders

Who you are
  • A proven, scoop-hungry reporter with at least 5 years of experience and a demonstrated track record of sourcing up on Wall Street, inside boardrooms, and private Signal chats- and a clear sense of where the next beat of a big story is heading
  • Someone who has developed a voice and smart takes on the biggest news in finance, and who can move fluidly between breaking a story and writing something authoritative and compelling about what it means
  • A comprehensive reader of the competitive landscape, always aware of what's been done and what hasn't
  • A self-starter with experience in fast-moving, ambitious newsroom environments and the willingness to jump in wherever the team needs you
  • A contagious passion for news in all its forms

Compensation

The base salary for this position ranges from $140,000 to $200,000. Individual compensation varies based on job-related factors, including business needs, experience, level of responsibility, and qualifications.

Additional job details

Semafor offers a Flexible Paid Time Off (PTO) policy to our full-time, salaried employees who may take paid time off as-needed without a prescribed limit or defined balance.
