The Supervisory Operations Research Analyst leads a branch responsible for managing injury and fatality data, overseeing public reporting processes, coordinating with technical partners, obtaining data from key external sources, reviewing data to identify potential risks, improving reporting systems, and tracking performance measures to support organizational goals.

This position is the Branch Chief for the Data Operations Branch in the Division of Hazard & Injury Data Systems, Directorate for Epidemiology. This position is officially titled Supervisory Operations Research Analyst. The working/organizational title is Branch Chief.

The Branch Chief will:

• Lead a branch responsible for managing data operations, overseeing workflow, and ensuring timely processing of agency intake channels.
• Guide improvements to data systems, applying analytical methods to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and decision-making.
• Oversee data collection activities, including coordination with external partners to acquire critical information and maintain data quality.
• Manage intake processes and related technologies, ensuring effective operations, automation, and modernization.
• Supervise a multidisciplinary team, oversee contractor support, and direct data review, analysis, and publication activities.
• Use performance metrics to manage workload, improve responsiveness, and support operational goals.
• Provide expert guidance on analytical methods, modeling approaches, and data quality practices.
• Support data governance efforts and coordinate initiatives across organizational units.
• Oversee budget execution, staffing needs, and resource planning.
• Lead analyses to identify risks, emerging issues, and opportunities to strengthen public safety.
• Contribute to reports, data dissemination, and outreach efforts to support informed use of agency data.
• Maintain professional partnerships and stay current on evolving data collection practices.

Depending on your status, this position may require serving a 1-year supervisory probationary period.

Qualifications

In addition to the mandatory education requirement, all applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.

Qualifying specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

GS-14: 1) Leading complex data operations for managing risk to the public; 2) applying advanced operations research methods-including modeling, simulation, and optimization-to improve process and system efficiency and resource allocation; 3) overseeing modernization and integration of data systems and automated processes; 4) managing operational metrics, contracts, budgets, and resources; 5) coordinating with external partners to acquire high-quality data and support external compliance with government requests; 6) analyzing operational outreach and reportable event channels to enhance early warning and programmatic response.

Education

Mandatory Education Requirement. All applicants must meet one of the following requirements to qualify:

A. Degree: in operations research;

OR

B. At least 24 semester hours in a combination of operations research, mathematics, probability, statistics, mathematical logic, science, or subject-matter courses requiring substantial competence in college-level mathematics or statistics. At least 3 of the 24 semester hours must have been in calculus.

CPSC headquarters employees (Bethesda, MD) will be relocating to 441 G Street NW, Washington, DC. This position will transition to the new location upon completion of the move. The transition is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
