Overview

Biostatistician III provides scientific, analytical, and technical support for vaccine effectiveness studies, disease surveillance, epidemiologic investigations, and infectious disease modeling. Responsibilities include study design, data management, statistical analysis, surveillance system support, and scientific communication to inform evidence-based public health interventions. This role requires close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams and public health partners to advance understanding of mpox and other poxvirus-related diseases.

Responsibilities
  • Perform scientific work related to vaccine effectiveness, case surveillance, special investigations, and communication with public health partners.
  • Lead vaccine effectiveness studies, including coordination with internal and external partners to support study implementation and execution.
  • Develop study designs under supervisory direction and conduct epidemiologic, statistical, and vaccine effectiveness analyses.
  • Clean, manage, and analyze surveillance and epidemiologic data to identify cases, clusters, trends, and potential public health concerns.
  • Support national case-based surveillance activities by collaborating with the Pox Epidemiology Team and state, local, tribal, territorial, and other external partners.
  • Manage and maintain data for multiple clinical and epidemiologic studies, including vaccine effectiveness research.
  • Design, develop, maintain, and query databases to support data storage, retrieval, integration, and analysis.
  • Perform data acquisition, data mining, data entry, validation, cleaning, manipulation, and organization from primary and secondary data sources.
  • Develop and implement data collection systems, analytical methodologies, and strategies that improve data quality, computational efficiency, and statistical rigor.
  • Conduct mathematical, statistical, and epidemiologic analyses; interpret findings; and prepare reports, summaries, and recommendations.
  • Integrate diverse data sources, including case surveillance, contact tracing, vaccine administration, travel, genomic, and serologic data, to evaluate mpox epidemiology and intervention effectiveness.
  • Identify, analyze, and interpret trends, patterns, and associations within complex public health datasets.
  • Estimate epidemiologic parameters and conduct analyses to inform infectious disease modeling efforts.
  • Adapt existing and develop new computational tools, analytical methods, and infectious disease transmission, forecasting, validation, and model-fitting approaches.
  • Maintain comprehensive and accurate documentation of data sources, analytical methodologies, modeling procedures, and study results suitable for peer-reviewed publication.
  • Support the dissemination of research findings through reproducible code, technical reports, presentations, manuscripts, and scientific publications.
  • Prepare written communications, stakeholder updates, correspondence, and outreach materials that strengthen partner engagement and collaboration.
  • Develop educational and communication materials and participate in trainings, meetings, and briefings for public health professionals and partners.
  • Provide technical support and consultation to clinicians, public health officials, and the public through poxvirus response and phone duty activities.
  • Collaborate effectively with supervisors and multidisciplinary teams across the Branch, Division, Agency, and external partner organizations to accomplish assigned objectives.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with Microsoft Access, Excel, and statistical software packages such as SAS, SPSS, R, or equivalent analytical tools.
  • Present research activities, project updates, plans, and findings at laboratory, team, branch, and stakeholder meetings.

  • 5+ years of experience with data management, database development, and large-scale public health datasets.
  • Proficiency in statistical software such as SAS, R, SPSS, or equivalent analytical tools.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, Access, and other data management applications.
  • Experience conducting statistical analyses, model development, and interpretation of epidemiologic results.
  • Ability to communicate complex scientific information effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience working with integrated public health datasets, including genomic, vaccination, surveillance, and contact tracing data.
  • Experience supporting infectious disease outbreak response and public health surveillance programs.
  • Familiarity with disease transmission modeling, forecasting, and computational epidemiology.
  • Experience preparing peer-reviewed manuscripts, technical reports, and scientific presentations.
  • Performs directed subject matter work.
  • Supports team in producing high-quality deliverable in time efficient manner.
