I. DEPARTMENT INFORMATION

Job Description Summary:

The Department of Epidemiology at the Milken Institute School of Public Health at the George Washington University is seeking a Biostatistician II to analyze large electronic health record datasets for a National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded prospective multi-site longitudinal cohort study, the DC Cohort. This study captures clinical data on persons with HIV or at risk of acquiring HIV and receiving outpatient care in Washington, DC at 14 clinical sites and has been operating since 2009 in partnership with numerous clinical providers in Washington, DC, the DC Department of Health, and the NIH. The individual will join the DC Cohort Analytic Group and work on data cleaning, validation, quality control, and analysis to generate insights that improve the health of people living with HIV, and will participate as a co-author in preparation of scientific manuscripts and presentations reporting study results.

The work involves analyzing complex longitudinal multi-site data and requires familiarity with statistical programming and advanced epidemiological regression methods such as survival analysis and multilevel models. Using a wide degree of creativity and latitude, the core responsibilities of this position are to make detailed observations, analyze data, and interpret results, with limited guidance from the Principal Investigator.

Responsibilities include:
  • Participates as a member of a multi-disciplinary team of epidemiologists and clinicians to ensure high-quality deliverables are completed efficiently
  • Advises collaborators on epidemiologic study design and methods
  • Prepares datasets for analysis and conducts data analysis using advanced epidemiological models and statistical procedures in SAS, including macros and arrays
  • Extract, link, clean, code, and process datasets from multiple systems
  • Performs data inspection and cleaning in SAS, including recoding, harmonization, and missing data assessment
  • Evaluate data quality, validity, and reliability
  • Develops detailed data analysis plans for addressing selected research questions
  • Creates detailed documentation of analyses and analytic code
  • Undertakes detailed review and checking of SAS code written by other colleagues
  • Contributes portions of abstracts, posters, reports, and manuscripts for major publications in leading public health and medical journals
  • Participates in general staff meetings or study-specific meetings as required
  • Performs other duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a MS or MPH in Biostatistics, Statistics, Health Data Science, Epidemiology, or related field, plus 3 years of relevant experience. Relevant experience must be progressive Master's level or equivalent experience in Statistics, biostatistics, health data science, or related field. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Minimum 3 years of experience conducting statistical analyses of epidemiologic or clinical data, including development of analysis plans and preparation of analytic datasets, is desired
  • Advanced proficiency in SAS, including programming for data cleaning, dataset construction, quality assurance, and implementation of longitudinal and survival analyses, is preferred
  • Demonstrated experience working with HIV-related data or in HIV research settings (e.g., cohort studies, clinical databases, surveillance systems) is desired
  • Experience preparing data for analysis from complex, multi-source datasets (e.g., electronic health records, laboratory data, or survey data) is preferred
  • Strong scientific writing skills are desired
