Job Description

The Product Development Engineer will play a key role in advancing innovative medical technologies within Mount Sinai BioDesign. This entry-level position offers the opportunity to work at the intersection of engineering, medicine, and entrepreneurship. The engineer will contribute to device design, prototyping, and testing while also engaging directly with clinicians to identify unmet needs through the Biodesign process. This role is ideal for a motivated early-career engineer seeking hands-on experience in translational research and medical device innovation.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in surgeon and clinician interviews to identify clinical pain points and translate insights into engineering requirements.
  • Assist in the design and development of medical device prototypes using CAD tools, 3D printing, machining, and other prototyping methods.
  • Conduct bench testing and validation studies to characterize device performance.
  • Support needs-finding, concept generation, and iterative design within the structured Biodesign process.
  • Document design iterations, testing protocols, and results for regulatory, intellectual property, and grant purposes.
  • Collaborate with clinicians, researchers, and industry partners to refine concepts and ensure clinical relevance.
  • Maintain lab resources, ensure compliance with safety standards, and contribute to efficient prototyping workflows.
  • Engage with external vendors and fabrication shops for materials, components, and device manufacturing.
  • Provide cross-functional support on BioDesign projects spanning medical, engineering, and business disciplines.

Compensation Statement

The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides salary ranges that comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $65,885.00 - $98,827.00 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and operational need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
