The individual will collaborate with a group of engineers and scientists including Synthetic Biology, Analytical Chemistry, Computational Biology, & Bioprocess teams. The scientist will bring expertise in enzyme characterization and screening and bring a keen interest in scientific discovery.

Key Accountabilities

  • Spend 50-75% of their time to build and conduct wet-lab experiments to characterize enzyme activity and perform qualitative and quantitative analysis of substrates and products via biochemical assays.

  • Be a subject matter expert in key enzymes of interest through review of literature and patents and will make recommendations to guide research accordingly.

  • This role will collaborate with cross-functional teams to discover improved enzyme sequences through a combination of sequence, structural, and/or computational methods.

  • Participate in maintaining equipment, consumables, inventory, and safe practices, will write detailed SOPs, will maintain detailed records in Benchling, and will manage large data sets.

  • This role will frequently update teams (typically through concise presentations) and will show aptitude for communicating and creating meaningful team interactions.

  • This role will promote safety initiatives and champion compliance with BP's Code of Conduct.

Essential Criteria and Qualifications

  • Enzymology: Knowhow and experience in enzyme functional characterization, identification of enzymes in crude mixtures, enzyme quantification, stability testing, and determination of constants from enzyme steady-state kinetic testing.

  • Development of biochemical assays: including coupled assays, endpoint and continuous.

  • Develop data analysis and visualization from high-throughput and quantitative experiments including statistical significance of conclusions.

  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and make concise summaries.

  • Organization:Ability to prioritize responsibilities, respond flexibly to changing priorities, and work effectively in a multitasking and matrix environment.

About BP

BP p.l.c. is a British multinational oil and gas company headquartered in London, England. It is one of the oil and gas "supermajors" and one of the world's largest companies measured by revenues and profits. It is a vertically integrated company operating in all areas of the oil and gas industry, including exploration and extraction, refining, distribution and marketing, power generation, and trading. BP's origins date back to the founding of the Anglo-Persian Oil Company in 1908, established as a subsidiary of Burmah Oil Company to exploit oil discoveries in Iran. In 1935, it became the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company and in 1954, adopted the name British Petroleum. In 1959, the company expanded beyond the Middle East to Alaska. British Petroleum acquired majority control of Standard Oil of Ohio in 1978. Formerly majority state-owned, the British government privatised the company in stages between 1979 and 1987. British Petroleum merged with Amoco in 1998, becoming BP Amoco plc, and acquired ARCO and Burmah Castrol in 2000 and Aral AG in 2002. The company's name was shortened to BP p.l.c. in 2001. From 2003 to 2013, BP was a partner in the TNK-BP joint venture in Russia, and from 2013 until Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, held a nearly 20% stake in Rosneft.
