The Role

The EV Battery Lifecycle Engineer position will focus on the development and execution of battery recycling strategies. You will work with a cross-functional team to create battery lifecycle strategies for GM batteries to meet corporate goals for profitable sustainability.  In this Level 7 Program Execution role, you will independently manage complex projects, coordinate cross-functional teams, and partner with internal and external stakeholders to design and implement robust recycling, waste, and materials management solutions across GM facilities, plants, and our supplier ecosystem.

What You Will Do

  • Lead end‑to‑end projects that support GM’s EV battery and broader materials recycling strategies, including closed‑loop recycling supply chains and facility/plant waste management initiatives.
  • Plan and manage complex, multi‑phase projects (scope, schedule, budget, risk, and stakeholder alignment) across functions such as GM Customer Care & Aftersales, Sustainable Workplaces, Product Development, Purchasing, Finance, Manufacturing, and Communications.
  • Work independently with external suppliers, recyclers, and logistics providers to define requirements, evaluate capabilities, negotiate technical approaches, and drive high‑quality execution at plants and facilities.
  • Evaluate supplier capabilities and proposals for contract awards
  • Write Statement of Requirements (SORs) for battery lifecycle Requests for Quotations (RFQs).
  • Support Lifecycle and Innovation Business Case Development by analyzing data, monitoring industry conditions and developments, and soliciting input from stakeholders. 
  • Collaborate with Communications team on the crafting of internal and external communications related to recycling. 
  • Collaborate with cross functional team to develop a pack, module, and cell sustainability plan with stakeholders
  • Collaborate with Pack, Module, and cell Technical Specialists to develop design for recyclability requirements
  • Serve as a representative of the team and General Motors at external forums and conferences.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Environmental Science or related field
  • Typically 5+ years of relevant professional experience (e.g., engineering, environmental, operations, or program management).
  • Demonstrated project or program management experience leading cross‑functional initiatives, including planning, execution, and stakeholder alignment.
  • Proven ability to work independently with external suppliers, service providers, and/or regulatory agencies to define work, resolve issues, and drive results.
  • Experience collaborating with cross‑functional partners (for example: Aftersales, Sustainable Workplaces, Product Development, Manufacturing, New Business Development, Product Planning, Finance, and Communications).
  • Working knowledge of environmental regulations and practices related to waste, recycling, and/or dangerous goods (e.g., hazardous waste, batteries, chemical materials, or transportation of dangerous goods), and the ability to apply them in an operational context.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with the ability to work from limited or ambiguous information to develop practical, data‑driven solutions for new or non‑standard problems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to develop and deliver clear, high‑quality communications and presentations to technical and non‑technical stakeholders at multiple levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to take ownership of commitments, work with minimal guidance, manage multiple priorities, and deliver results on time and to a high standard.

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Graduate Degree in Business, Engineering, Environmental, Sustainability, Manufacturing or related field
  • Experience in EV battery lifecycle, battery chemistry, pack/module/cell development, validation, or service operations (EV battery experience is strongly preferred but not required).
  • Prior responsibility for environmental, waste, or dangerous goods programs in a manufacturing plant, warehouse, or large facility network.
  • Experience managing external suppliers, recyclers, or logistics partners, including performance management and contract execution.
  • Understanding of automotive service and aftersales processes and requirements, particularly as they relate to high‑voltage batteries, components, or hazardous materials.
  • Systems engineering or operations experience integrating technical, regulatory, and business considerations into cohesive program plans.
  • Demonstrated capability to develop business cases for decisions requiring technical, logistical, regulatory, manufacturing and supplier inputs
