AV Designer 2

Design Studio team in our Chicago office is seeking an AV Designer with 2-5 years of experience. This role will design and document integrated audiovisual systems for the built environment while collaborating with clients, architects, engineers, vendors, and contractors. The AV Designer will contribute throughout the project lifecycle and help our engineering team deliver coordinated, high-quality projects.

The work typically requires the use hands to type, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is regularly required to stand and perform work in the field. The typical week consists of five, eight-hour shifts.

Position Overview

Our AV Designers execute the planning, design, coordination, and documentation of integrated audiovisual systems for a variety of exciting projects. At dbHMS, our Designers work under the direction of Senior Engineers, gaining knowledge, experience and expertise in all phases of the design process. The tasks associated with this position include developing system concepts, drawings, specifications, equipment selections, and supporting calculations while coordinating AV requirements with architectural and engineering disciplines. The ideal candidate has 2-5 years of relevant AV experience, a strong technical foundation, careful attention to detail, and the communication skills needed to work effectively with clients, consultants, vendors, and project teams.

Essential Job Functions
  • Design integrated audiovisual systems, including presentation, collaboration, conferencing, sound reinforcement, digital signage, control, audio and video distribution, and related infrastructure.
  • Research and evaluate AV products, manufacturers, and system approaches with the project lead to develop solutions that meet client requirements, project constraints, applicable standards, and budget objectives.
  • Collaborate with Clients, Architects, Engineers, Vendors, and Contractors to define AV requirements, evaluate design options, coordinate infrastructure, and resolve technical issues throughout the project.
  • Develop AV contract documents, including plans, reflected ceiling plans, details, equipment schedules, signal flow diagrams, and technical specifications to meet project deliverables.
  • Coordinate AV equipment, pathways, power, data, structural support, acoustical considerations, and equipment locations with architecture, internal and external engineering disciplines.
  • Produce AV designs and documentation using Revit and AutoCAD.

Requirements
  • Basic engineering or construction background (preferred)
  • Two to five years of experience designing or supporting professional audiovisual systems.
  • Operate computer software such as Microsoft Office programs to perform AV design or calculations.
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field preferred; equivalent relevant AV design experience will also be considered. CTS or CTS-D certification is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of Display Technologies, Sound Reinforcement, Collaboration and Control Systems, AV-over-IP (plus), Equipment Rack Design, and supporting infrastructure.
  • Ability to work with clients to make informed AV design decisions and recommendations.

Pay Range: $70,000 - $85,000 per hour
