Job Description

Purpose:

Under the general direction of the Director of Peri-Operative service, works Collaboratively with other services and disciplines to plan, develop and evaluate comprehensive care for patients in the Peri-Operative/Endoscopy department.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

The Assistant Director, Nursing is charged with and responsible for:
• Coordinates guides directs the development implantation and evaluation of the nursing regime for Peri-operative patients.
• Acts as a mentor for new and incumbent staff.
• Develops implements and evaluates educational activities.
• Demonstrates knowledge of principals of management and supervision in planning in Per-Operative activities and assisting staff to meet this on a day to day basis.
• Participates in the development/enchantment and solves problems using PI approach.
• Uses appropriate labor relation's principals and disciplinary procedure to counsel staff regarding problematic issues.
• Assists in designing monitors for PI projects in the department, interprets results for staff for change in delivery of care.
• Evaluates the operation of the departments daily, focusing on potential problems and providing solution including staffing, record keeping and communication with Director of Nursing Peri-Operative Services.
• Works closely with head nurses to interpret hospital mission/vision statements so staff can communicate these to patients/families.
• Participates in performance improvement (PI), joint commission (JC) and other regulatory agency activities.
• In collaboration with the director, plans and implement an orientation for new staff.
• Collaborates on policy development/revisions and implements policies in the department.
• Guides, coordinates and directs the development and maintenance of a system of evaluation of the nursing care, practice and procedures, including the evaluation of nursing personnel within the Peri-Operative area.
• Defines, implements, maintains the standards of nursing practice, care and evaluates the quality of nursing care provided within the Peri-Operative area.
• Reviews and analyzes trends pertinent to the delivery of nursing care within the clinical service and initiates appropriate innovations or makes recommendations for needed changes in collaboration with the Director of Service.
• Develops, plans and implements continuing education for all Peri-Operative areas.
• Attends/participates in continuing education programs.
• Initiates and maintains system of communication with staff on a 24hour basis.
• Conducts regular meetings with all the staff in the Peri-Operative units for adequate communication and problem solving in collaboration with the Director of Service.
• Initiates or participates in research to enhance nursing care and practice.
• Maintains clinical expertise in specialty, is available as a resource person for nursing personnel and other health team members.
• Serves as a resource person to peri-Operative staff and assume responsibility for the management of all Peri-Operative areas.
• Participates on assigned committees.
• Participates in administrative/management meetings and in the formulation of Peri-Operative department policies on collaboration with the Director of Service.
• Tracks and analyzes performance metrics (first case on-time starts, Turnover times, Surgical sight Infection)
• Acts as a key point of contact between surgical teams, anesthesia, Sterile processing, and other departments.
• Helps resolve conflicts and ensure surgeons satisfaction with scheduling and support services.
• Assumes full leadership responsibility in the absence of the Director Of Nursing.

Minimum Qualifications
1. Licensed and currently registered to practice as a professional nurse in New York State, plus (2) or (3), below.
2. Masters Degree in Nursing Administration, Education, Clinical Specialty or equivalent field and five years of satisfactory nursing experience, of which three years shall have been in a supervisory or teaching capacity; or a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing and six years of satisfactory nursing experience, four years of which shall have been in a supervisory or teaching capacity.
3. A satisfactory equivalent of education and experience. However, all candidates must be licensed and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State.
