Associate Visual Designer, New York, NY We're hiring an associate visual designer for the New York studio someone early in their career whose taste is already ahead of their re9sume9. TCS Interactive is a design studio inside one of the largest engineering companies in the world, which means the work in front of us is the software enormous institutions actually run on: banking, healthcare, retail, transportation. The products people use because they have to. The Fortune 100 clients are already in the building. Almost none of that work has ever been treated as a design problem worth anyone's best work, and we think it's the most interesting one left in the field. The studio is new, and what it looks like hasn't been decided yet. That gets settled over the next couple of years by a small number of people, and we're hiring one of them. WHO YOU'D LEARN FROM The studio's creative leadership team came from the New York agencies you'd expect R/GA, AKQA, Razorfish, BBH, Monks. Between them: work awarded at Cannes, D&AD, the One Show, the Clios, the Effies, the Webbys and the Emmys. A global healthcare rebrand across consumer health, pharma and medtech. Trading platforms people move real money through. The launch of a major streaming service. You'd be the most junior person in that room, and that's the offer. Mentorship here is a structure, not a promise you'd report to the Design Director, sit with a senior visual designer on real client work, and have your work critiqued by the studio's creative leadership on a standing basis. Plenty of studios have senior people. What's rarer is senior time set aside for teaching, and that's what this seat gets. WHAT YOU'D ACTUALLY MAKE Screens, components, layouts, iconography, motion studies, pitch boards. Typography and color inside a design system, and the pieces that get added to it. Work that goes into products, and work that goes into the room where new business gets won. Real work with your hands on it, from the first month. And all of it gets built. TCS designs and ships there's no handoff to a build partner, no point where someone else's team takes it from here. What you help design goes live, at scale, to a very large number of people. Most designers wait years for that. You'd get better fast. That's the deal. A year from now you should be able to point at what changed. WHO YOU PROBABLY ARE 2 One or two years in. Or straight out of school, if the work is already there. Based in New York. You care about how things look, past the point most people stop. Typography, spacing, color, the small decisions. You notice them in other people's work and it bothers you when they're wrong. You have a portfolio with a point of view in it. School projects, personal projects, internship work where it came from matters less than whether it's good. You can say why something works. "This pairing works because," followed by an actual sentence. You won't always be right. Being able to make the argument is the thing. Your references come from outside the design feed. Books, buildings, record sleeves, films, street signage, other people's countries. You've started thinking in flows and systems, not just single screens. You don't need to be fluent yet. You're already playing with the generative AI tools for exploration, mood, variation, whatever you've tried. You don't need a settled point of view on them yet. Working out where they stop being useful is part of what yo u'd learn here. You don't need to tick every box on this list. If the work is there and you want to be better than you are right now, apply. WHAT THE WORK IS ACTUALLY LIKE Some of this work goes through review legal, accessibility, regulatory. Designing something beautiful inside those constraints is harder than designing without them, and we treat that as the design problem rather than as the reason the work has to be ordinary.
