What you will do

In this vital role as Associate Vice President, Scaled Operations and Transformation you will lead the operating system, enablement, and cross-functional mechanisms that make AI&D more consistent, scalable, and high-performing.The role translates AI&D strategy into clear operating standards, decision rights, performance mechanisms, workforce and capability plans, and repeatable ways of working across the AI&D organization.Serving as an enterprise integrator and catalyst for execution, the AVP will connect the AI&D leadership team with Product, Data, AI/DS, Technology, Finance, Human Resources, business functions, and external partners to remove friction, accelerate execution, and enable reuse across the organization. The role will build a globally connected operating model across US and AIN talent while helping AI&D move from experimentation to coordinated scale.The AVP will lead four integrated capabilities: Operating Excellence; Continuous Improvement & Organizational Performance; Partner Enablement & Operations; and Enterprise AI Literacy & Learning and Development. The role will establish mechanisms for handoffs and transition-to-scale, coordinate cross-AI&D operating interventions, and recommend capacity, workforce, and operating-model shifts.

Key Responsibilities:

Operating Excellence
  • Define and evolve AI&D operating models, governance, forums, decision rights, and standards that enable consistent execution across teams and geographies.
  • Establish repeatable ways of working, delivery standards, playbooks, and handoff patterns across AI&D, including clear transition-to-scale mechanisms.
  • Translate AI&D strategy into practical operating mechanisms that clarify accountability, dependencies, escalation paths, and execution rhythm.
  • Identify and address duplication, fragmentation, and gaps across teams while preserving accountability with business, Product, Data, AI/DS, and platform owners.


Continuous Improvement & Organizational Performance
  • Establish performance KPIs, operating reviews, and management mechanisms that provide leaders with timely insight into outcomes, capacity, risks, and health execution.
  • Drive capacity and workforce planning insights across AI&D, including location, talent mix, resource allocation, and capability need.
  • Lead continuous-improvement efforts to surface friction, prioritize enterprise interventions, and drive issues through resolution and adoption.
  • Use portfolio and resource analytics to identify trends, interdependencies, and opportunities to improve cycle time, productivity, and organizational effectiveness.


Partner Enablement & Operations
  • Establish AI&D partner and vendor operating standards, engagement playbooks, governance mechanisms, and health/performance measures.
  • Coordinate key external providers with the appropriate AI&D capability owners, ensuring clear accountability, milestones, handoffs, and value expectations.
  • Provide ecosystem insight and recommendations on partner utilization, operating models, and opportunities to improve reuse, leverage, and execution.
  • Complement Corporate Business Development and contracting organizations by enabling effective pull-through and operational use of AI&D partner relationships.


Enterprise AI Literacy & Capability Development
  • Lead the enterprise AI literacy and capability-development strategy in partnership with functional and enterprise learning leaders.
  • Define learning roadmaps, role-based pathways, onboarding and upskilling approaches, communities of practice, certification mechanisms, and change-enablement strategies.
  • Ensure AI&D has the skills, knowledge, and adoption mechanisms required to leverage AI tools and capabilities effectively and responsibly.
  • Use workforce insights and adoption measures to identify capability gaps and prioritize future learning investments.


Cross-AI&D Integration & Transformation
  • Serve as connective tissue across the AI&D leadership organization while maintaining clear ownership with the appropriate capability, Product, Data, AI/DS, platform, or business leader.
  • Lead cross-enterprise operating interventions that span multiple AI&D pillars, functions, and geographies, resolving dependencies and escalating enterprise tradeoffs to the VP.
  • Partner with workforce transformation efforts, including TWFS, to translate organizational and workforce decisions into executable operating plans and sustainable capabilities.
  • Represent AI&D in relevant enterprise transformation forums and share standards, lessons, tools, and reusable practices across the organization.


Team and Organizational Leadership
  • Build and lead a high-performing, globally connected organization across the four capabilities, with clear accountabilities, decision rights, and development paths.
  • Attract, develop, coach, and retain talent across operating model, strategy and operations, workforce planning, ecosystem management, learning, analytics, and transformation disciplines.
  • Deploy internal resources and external partners flexibly based on emerging AI&D needs, maintaining a lean operating model and strong spans of control.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, disciplined execution, continuous improvement, and accountability across US and AIN teams.


Scope and Impact
  • Owns the AI&D operating system and enablement mechanisms that influence how work is planned, governed, delivered, transitioned, and improved across the organization.
  • Leads four integrated capabilities with cross-AI&D impact and coordinates work across AI&D pillars, enterprise functions, business stakeholders, and geographies.
  • Influences operating decisions involving governance, workforce and capacity, partner models, performance management, learning, and organizational effectiveness.
  • Partners regularly with the AI&D leadership team and senior leaders across Product, Data, AI/DS, Technology, Finance, Human Resources, business functions, and enterprise transformation teams.
  • Operates across US and AIN talent and helps establish globally scalable ways of working, with responsibility for balancing enterprise consistency with local execution needs.
  • Accountable for volume, quality, timeliness, and business impact of operating-model and enablement outputs; shared accountability applies to outcomes owned by the relevant business or capability leaders.


Success in the role may be evaluated through a balanced set of measures, including:
  • Adoption and effectiveness of AI&D operating standards, governance, decision rights, and delivery playbooks.
  • Improvement in execution speed, handoff cycle time, capacity utilization, and organizational performance.
  • Quality and health of partner/vendor engagement, including performance, reuse, and operational leverage.
  • AI literacy reach, capability development, learning impact, and adoption of enterprise AI tools and ways of working.
  • Workforce and capacity insights that improve allocation of resources and support AI&D location and capability strategies.
  • Resolution of cross-AI&D friction points and successful implementation of priority continuous-improvement interventions.
  • Effectiveness of cross-functional alignment, operating rhythm, decision-making, and enterprise integration.
  • Sustainability and scalability of AI&D operating mechanisms as the organization moves from experimentation to scaled execution.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Doctorate degree & 7 years transformation experience OR
  • Master's degree & 10 years of transformation experience OR
  • Bachelor's degree & 12 years of transformation experience AND
  • 7 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources


Preferred Qualifications:
  • 15+ years of progressive leadership experience across technology, AI/data, digital transformation, operations, strategy and operations, or related disciplines.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and scaling enterprise operating models and leading complex, cross-functional transformation.
  • Proven experience leading global teams and influencing senior executives across business and technology organizations.
  • Advanced degrees in business, technology, data, organizational effectiveness, or related field.
  • Experience in biopharma/life sciences and regulated environments.
  • Experience operating across US and global delivery organizations or shared-service models.

Actual salary will vary based on several factors including, but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.In addition to the base salary, Amgen offers a Total Rewards Plan, based on eligibility, comprising of health and welfare plans for staff and eligible dependents, financial plans with opportunities to save towards retirement or other goals, work/life balance, and career development opportunities that may include:
