Job Description

Reporting directly to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the AVP provides leadership and oversight for institutional accreditation, assessment, program and curriculum review, Institutional Planning, Assessment and Research (IPAR), and Grants & Sponsored Projects. As a member of the Provost's Council, the AVP exercises significant responsibility in institutional research reporting, academic and institutional planning, strategic plan implementation and assessment, program review, shared governance, and curricular initiatives. The AVP represents the Provost as needed, including participation in Cabinet meetings, and is authorized to act on behalf of and sign for the Provost in the Provost's absence.

Responsibilities:

1. Strategic Leadership
  • In partnership with the Provost and university leadership, provide leadership for the development, implementation, monitoring, and assessment of the University's Strategic Plan and Academic Plan.
  • Coordinate strategic planning processes, tracks progress toward institutional goals, analyzes and reports outcomes, and ensures alignment among academic priorities, resource allocation, accreditation requirements, and institutional effectiveness initiatives.
  • Together with the Academic Affairs Team (Provost/VPA; Dean of Library, Online Learning, and Teaching Excellence; Chief Information Officer (CIO); Executive Director of Rochester; and college deans), provide overall leadership, direction, implementation of university strategic plan and academic plan, and management of faculty, staff and students.
  • Participate in the leadership of the University as a member of the President's Council of Administrators and Provost's Council.
  • Act as Designee for the Provost/VPAA in their absence from campus


2. Assessment of Student Learning, Program Review, Curriculum and Accreditation
  • Provides leadership for academic program review, student and program learning outcomes assessment, curriculum review processes, and institutional accreditation in collaboration with faculty and deans.
  • Serve as the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) Accreditation Liaison Officer, ensuring compliance with accreditation standards and coordinates university-wide accreditation activities.
  • Provide administrative leadership, support, and guidance, (in close collaboration with the Dean of the Library, Online Learning & Teaching Excellence), to assessment of student learning and the governance structures of the University including the Improvement, Accreditation & Assessment Committee (ImpAACt).


3. Institutional Planning, Assessment and Research (IPAR) Operations
  • Serve as the Director of IPAR, providing strategic direction for institutional research, analytics, and reporting, transforming data into actionable intelligence that informs decision-making, supports student success, guides resource allocation, and advances the university's mission and strategic priorities.
  • Lead efforts to ensure academic quality, institutional effectiveness, and continuous improvement across the university.
  • Serve as the university's primary resource for institutional research and analytics, fostering a culture of evidence-based planning, accountability, and assessment
  • Work collaboratively across campus to assess outcomes and is responsible for supporting assessment of improvement of student learning; and ensuring the integrity of the programs
  • Play a leadership role to ensure that department goals align with university goals within these areas of oversight
  • Lead the regional accreditation effort and the development and completion of the Self-Study Reports for all cycles of Higher Learning Commission (HLC) review.


4. Grants and Sponsored Projects Operations
  • Oversee the university's Grants and Sponsored Projects Office
  • Support the enhancement of student and faculty research opportunities.


5. Personnel and Resource Management
  • Responsible for conducting performance evaluations of direct reports
  • and supporting the mentoring and professional development of staff.
  • Determines fiscal and personnel priorities, develops budget requests, and allocates unit resources in collaboration with the Academic Affairs Budget Analyst.
  • Implements and enforces contractual obligations as defined in collective bargaining agreements, university policies, and Minnesota State policies and procedures.


6. Other responsibilities as designated by the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs including but not limited to:
  • Represent the interests and concerns of the University at conferences, at the Minnesota State system, state and national level
  • Participate in university, MinnState, and national committees and councils.


Salary Range: $131,1469-$210,235; commensurate with qualifications and experience

Minimum Qualifications
  • Earned doctorate degree in one of the disciplines reflected in the University from a regionally accredited institution
  • At least eight (8) years of successful experience in higher education, including both administrative (e.g., program director, department chair, dean) and full-time teaching.

Preferred Qualification
  • Strong demonstrated skills in data analytics and experience working in institutional research unit
  • Strong demonstrated skills in leadership, resource management, and personnel management
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the societal trends such as economic, political, and demographic that impact academics and higher education in general.
  • Ability to guide and maintain a diverse portfolio and make connections between the major areas of the university
  • Broad experience in designing and implementing initiatives and strategies that are innovative and sustainable
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a culturally diverse setting; strong commitment to diversity

The Key Accountabilities include:
  • Lead and address all aspects of the HLC Accreditation process.
  • Lead, coordinate, and facilitate the Program Review Process for all academic programs in all colleges.
  • Curriculum review to ensure an academic portfolio that is of high quality and rigor.
  • Invent data communication systems to support data-informed decision making by university administrators and academic leaders.
  • Communicate complex data findings so all audiences understand what the data are saying and how to use them to inform their decision or direction setting for their unit.
  • Envision long range planning and implementation for academic affairs and university.
