Associate, HSSE

Job Type: Exempt Salaried, Full-Time
Location: Virginia or North Carolina (Remote/Field-Based)

Job Summary

TerraForm Power is seeking an experienced HSSE Associate to provide regional Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental (HSSE) support across the company's renewable energy portfolio, supporting both operating assets and construction projects.

Reporting to the HSSE leader, the HSSE Associate will independently lead field-based HSSE initiatives, provide technical guidance to leaders and contractors, conduct complex investigations and audits, and identify opportunities to strengthen organizational HSSE performance. The ideal candidate is a seasoned HSSE professional with experience supporting geographically dispersed operations in renewable energy, utilities, construction, or other industrial environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Promote a positive safety culture and serve as a trusted HSSE resource across assigned operating facilities and construction projects.
  • Support the implementation, execution, and continuous improvement of HSSE programs, policies, standards, and procedures across the assigned region.
  • Partner with Operations, Construction, Engineering, and Development teams to identify risks and integrate HSSE best practices into day-to-day operations and project execution.
  • Conduct field inspections, audits, observations, and risk assessments to identify hazards, evaluate compliance, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Lead incident, near-miss, and environmental event investigations, including root cause analysis, corrective action development, and follow-up to ensure effective resolution.
  • Provide technical guidance and coaching to site personnel, project teams, and contractors on HSSE requirements, safe work practices, and regulatory compliance.
  • Support contractor qualification, onboarding, field oversight, and performance monitoring to ensure compliance with Company HSSE standards.
  • Monitor compliance with applicable federal, state, and local health, safety, and environmental regulations, as well as Company policies and procedures.
  • Analyze HSSE performance metrics, identify trends, and recommend continuous improvement initiatives to reduce operational risk and improve overall performance.
  • Deliver and coordinate HSSE training, safety meetings, and awareness initiatives for employees and contractors.
  • Maintain accurate HSSE records, compliance documentation, regulatory reports, and performance metrics.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness planning, drills, and response activities as needed.
  • Travel regularly to operating facilities and construction sites throughout the assigned region to provide field support and oversight.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive HSSE experience, with 5-7+ years preferred, supporting industrial operations, construction, utilities, renewable energy, or other high-risk environments.
  • Experience supporting both operating facilities and construction projects.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA regulations, environmental compliance requirements, and HSSE management systems.
  • Experience conducting audits, inspections, risk assessments, and incident investigations, including root cause analysis.
  • Ability to provide technical guidance and build strong working relationships with employees, contractors, and cross-functional teams.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities across a geographically dispersed region.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and HSSE management systems.
  • Professional certifications such as ASP, CSP, CHST, OHST, or equivalent are preferred.


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to travel up to 60% of the time.
  • Ability to work in active construction and operating facility environments.
  • Ability to wear required PPE and perform field inspections in varying weather conditions.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel throughout the assigned territory.
