Job Description:

The individual in this position will play a lead role in advanced data manipulation, integration, analysis, and dashboard development for the office. They will bring strong analytical skills and experience working with large, complex datasets often involving millions of records at the system, sector, and campus levels to produce both interactive dashboards as well as snapshot, longitudinal, and other analytic reports. The position requires strong technical and programming skills, as well as proficiency in creating user-friendly, insightful data visualizations for internal and public audiences. The individual will be curious, resourceful, self-motivated, and eager to continuously learn and apply new tools and techniques.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Data Analysis Specific:
  • Develop and deliver complex, interactive dashboards for public and internal audiences, integrating multiple data sources and applying advanced visualization techniques to communicate insights that inform institutional research, planning, and strategic decision-making.
  • Respond to ad hoc requests for data, analysis, and reporting with a high degree of accuracy, clarity, and timeliness.
  • Contribute to the design and development of robust survey instruments, including methodology, validation, and supporting documentation.
  • Design, develop, and maintain integrated datasets to support longitudinal, comparative, and advanced statistical analyses.
  • Document analytical methodologies, data sources, and processes to ensure transparency, reproducibility, and consistency.
  • Manage and coordinate analytic projects, ensuring timely delivery of high-quality, actionable insights for campuses and System Administration leadership.
  • Lead and contribute to the development of reports, briefs, dashboards, visualizations, and presentations tailored to diverse technical and non-technical audiences.

General Office:
  • Review and validate detailed campus data submissions, assisting in finalization to ensure a strong, accurate, and reliable data foundation for the office's work.
  • Collaborate closely with SUNY campus partners and System Administration colleagues to support coordinated data collection, analysis, and reporting efforts.
  • Lead and support responses to internal and external data requests both scheduled and ad hoc by providing accurate, timely, and clearly communicated data and analysis.
  • Support and manage components of NYSED and IPEDS reporting, ensuring compliance with evolving federal and state requirements.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:
  • Master's degree or higher in a relevant field.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience working with complex, large-scale data sets, including data integration, analysis, and reporting.
  • Demonstrated ability to create clear, compelling, and visually effective data visualizations, with advanced proficiency in Tableau and/or Power BI.
  • Demonstrated experience managing and manipulating relational databases and large-scale datasets.
  • Demonstrated experience working with data definitions, data dictionaries, and data standards to ensure consistency and data integrity.
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in programming languages and tools (e.g., SQL, Python, R) for data extraction, transformation, integration, and analysis.
  • Strong attention to detail, including the ability to identify errors, inconsistencies, and data quality issues in datasets, reports, and visualizations.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with System Administration staff and campus partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver high-quality work in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, including the ability to plan, prioritize, and execute multiple analytic and research initiatives while meeting deadlines.

Desired Qualifications:
  • At least five (5) years of experience working in higher education or a related research or policy environment.
  • Experience designing and developing databases, particularly large-scale datasets integrated from multiple sources.
  • Demonstrated experience querying, extracting, and analyzing data from large relational databases using SQL in an applied research, institutional research, or higher educational setting.
  • Experience translating analytical findings into clear, actionable deliverables for diverse audiences, including leadership, technical staff, and external stakeholders.
  • Experience integrating and reconciling data from multiple sources, including matching, cleaning, and validating large and complex datasets.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills, with the ability to proactively engage stakeholders and facilitate group discussions.

Additional Information:

  • Salary is dependent on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, experience, education, training, and certifications. The range for this position is $80,000 - $91,000.
  • Travel as required to give presentations to various SUNY groups, to participate in university initiative meetings, and for attendance at job-related conferences and/or trainings.
  • This is a full-time hybrid position that requires being on-site in Albany 50% time (alternating 3 days one week and 2 days the next.)
