Org. Setting and Reporting

The position is located in the Office of the Director of the Financing for Sustainable Development Office (FSDO) in the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). The FSDO works to advance policy and action on financing for sustainable development to support Member States and other stakeholders in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Sevilla Commitment and the Addis Ababa Action Agenda on Financing for Development by providing thought leadership and agenda sharing, promoting multistakeholder dialogue, identifying policy options and best practices, and offering strategic advice and support for capacity development in key areas. The Associate Economic Affairs Officer reports to the Director of FSDO and will focus primarily on international development cooperation.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the duties of an Associate Economic Affairs Officer are: ECONOMIC AND/OR SECTOR ANALYSIS: • Collects, evaluates, interprets, analyses specified statistics and qualitative socioeconomic information obtained from a variety of sources and pertaining to particular sectors, countries, regions or development topics, including through analytical work on international development cooperation. • Maintains databases and programmes for database management and organizes nonquantitative information. • Prepares briefing notes, inputs to speeches and similar material on economic or sector issues in a form that is meaningful to non-specialists; • Prepares first drafts of sector, country or regional components of analytical studies on development issues and policies, including analytical inputs related to trends and progress in international development cooperation. • Assists in the organization and servicing of expert group meetings, advisory group processes, panel discussions, seminars and similar consultations on development issues. INTERGOVERNMENTAL SUPPORT: • Prepares inputs for reports to intergovernmental bodies. • Follows intergovernmental meetings and prepares summary reports and similar material, including the ECOSOC Forum on Financing for Development and related follow-up processes. • Prepares inputs to statements by members of the Bureau and Secretariat staff to such meetings. • Assists in the organization of panels, round tables etc on development issues for intergovernmental processes. TECHNICAL COOPERATION: Compiles and analyses the data and other information necessary for the preparation of technical cooperation project proposals in the area of economic development. • Prepares documentation for technical cooperation programmes and projects. • Contributes to the preparation of capacity development activities related to effectiveness of development cooperation. • Monitors, backstops and assesses the implementation of technical cooperation programmes and projects, including through the use of data and country-level evidence. GENERAL: • Performs other related duties as required, including a variety of administrative tasks necessary for the final delivery of the work unit's services; • Undertakes on-the-job and other training activities, both internally and externally. • Contributes to the collection and analysis of data as well as identification of trends or patterns and provides draft insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods for data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.
