Duties & Responsibilities

PURPOSE OF POSITION

To serve as a facilitation and coordination medium for overall operational activities relating to the administration and management of the Emergency Department. To provide on-site support and assistance to the Emergency Department personnel as needed. To work collaboratively with the Chief of Service and the Nurse Manager in support of direct patient care activities.

TASK:The Associate Director of nursing is an integral member of Nursing services Administration. Under the supervision of The Director of Nursing or designee assumes administrative responsibilities and clinical oversight for Patient Care Services. Her responsibilities are carried out within the framework of the Hospital By-Laws, the Mission, Vision statements, policies and procedures, all regulatory (Joint commission, NYSDOH, NYCDOH, etc.) and professional organizational standards.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Coordinates Quality Improvement Committee i.e., Asthma Committee, chest pain and ED patient flow committee.
  • Monitors equipment availability i.e., stretchers, wheelchairs, etc.
  • Monitor and supervises compliance with Infection Control guidelines.
  • Work towards developing and efficient system to deal with ED clinic referrals.
  • Work towards developing an efficient patient education base i.e., Heat exhaustion, burn prevention, bicycle helmet use, insect bites, etc.
  • Develop and help with the education components of asthma adult and pediatrics.
  • Monitor reported cases of heat exhaustion.
  • ED inventory of all equipment.
  • Preventive maintenance agreements for equipment.
  • Monitor ED for patient flow.
  • Provide supervisory guidance for clerical staff and supervision.
  • Prepare work orders, work order request as necessary for operation.
  • Work with Nursing staff to facilitate expedited patient stay in ED.
  • Meet and work with other department heads to work towards enhancement of patient care i.e., Radiology, Respiratory, Escort Service and Pharmacy.
  • Work with Associate Executive Director, Medical Director and Senior Associate Director to Assure compliance with standards and practices of all regulatory agencies.
  • Performs these duties and responsibilities with a deep commitment to human dignity, respect, and basic human rights; and expand this commitment to all working relationship with patients, visitors and fellow employees.
  • Ensure a safe and secure environment free of hazards to reduce the risk of injury to call customers (patients, visitors and staff).
  • Conducts risk assessments to reduce adverse events.
  • Ensure that safety management issues are appropriately addressed.


Minimum Qualifications
1. Valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
2. Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in Nursing Administration or a related nursing discipline; and three (3) years of satisfactory nursing experience, two (2) years of which must have been in a responsible administrative or supervisory capacity, which may include managing a specific department or nursing unit within a hospital, overseeing patient care, staff management and the day-to-day operations of the department, as well as relevant clinical nursing experience in the area of nursing practice assigned; or
3. Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Nursing; and four (4) years of satisfactory nursing experience, three (3) years of which must have been in a responsible administrative or supervisory capacity described in 2 above.
4. May require Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA) depending on assignment/health care setting. If required, BLS must be obtained within sixty (60) calendar days of appointment to the title and maintained for the duration of the assignment.
