Position Summary

The Associate Director for Curriculum and Educational Effectiveness provides strategic leadership, administrative oversight, and operational management for university-wide initiatives that advance educational effectiveness and the assessment of student learning across the University at Buffalo. Reporting to the Associate Director (Interim) of the Office of Curriculum, Assessment and Teaching Transformation (CATT), this position leads the University's annual academic program assessment reporting process, comprehensive program review, Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) accreditation activities, and other institutional assessment initiatives that support continuous improvement, educational effectiveness, and student success.

The Associate Director oversees the planning, implementation, and continuous enhancement of institutional processes that ensure compliance with university, SUNY, and accreditation requirements while promoting a culture of evidence-informed decision-making and continuous improvement. Working collaboratively with academic leadership, faculty, assessment coordinators, governance committees, and institutional partners, the position develops and implements policies, procedures, technologies, and professional development that strengthen assessment practices and the meaningful use of evidence to improve teaching, learning, and academic programs.

As the operational leader of the Curriculum and Educational Effectiveness department within CATT, the Associate Director supervises professional staff responsible for assessment operations and educational effectiveness initiatives, establishes departmental priorities, manages complex institutional projects, and ensures the successful execution of strategic objectives. The position provides strategic oversight of institutional assessment technologies, reporting infrastructure, and related business processes to improve operational effectiveness, data quality, and institutional reporting.

The Associate Director serves as the University's subject matter expert on assessment, educational effectiveness, and accreditation, advising university leadership and academic units on institutional policies, regulatory requirements, accreditation standards, and national best practices. In partnership with colleagues responsible for curriculum governance and faculty development, the position contributes to a coordinated institutional approach to advancing academic quality and student learning.

Key Duties and Responsibilities include:
  • Provide strategic leadership for university-wide student learning outcomes and program assessment initiatives, including annual assessment reporting, to advance student learning and continuous improvement.
  • Lead the assessment and educational effectiveness components of institutional accreditation and Comprehensive Program Review, ensuring compliance with university, SUNY, and accreditation standards.
  • Direct the Curriculum and Educational Effectiveness department by supervising professional staff, establishing priorities, managing resources, and fostering organizational excellence.
  • Provide data reporting to units, programs, and departments for evidence-informed decision-making.
  • Serve as the University's senior consultant on assessment and educational effectiveness by providing campus leadership, strategic consultation, professional development, and cross-functional collaboration.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree or professional certification with 1 year of experience. A combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of a degree on a year for year basis.
  • Professional experience in higher education with demonstrated responsibility for institutional assessment, accreditation, educational effectiveness, institutional research, academic program review, or related functions.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and communicate assessment data to inform decision-making and continuous improvement.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience leading complex, university-wide projects and initiatives involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Experience interpreting and applying accreditation standards and assessment best practices.
  • Experience supervising professional staff and managing organizational priorities.
  • Doctoral degree in Higher Education, Educational Leadership, Assessment, Evaluation, Organizational Leadership, or a related discipline.
  • Seven or more years of progressively responsible leadership experience in assessment or institutional effectiveness within a research university.
  • Experience with MSCHE accreditation or other regional/programmatic accreditation processes.
  • Experience administering assessment management systems.
  • Experience supporting Comprehensive Program Review or academic quality assurance initiatives.
  • Knowledge of SUNY policies, higher education governance, and assessment of student learning.
  • Experience with data visualization, business intelligence, or analytics tools.
