Job Summary:

Student Experience & Recreation is seeking an Associate Director of Facilities and Risk. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.

The Associate Director of Facilities and Risk provides leadership, administration, and operational direction for Oregon State University's Recreational Sports facilities, grounds, equipment, building services, maintenance operations, space utilization, and departmental risk management functions. As a key member of the Recreational Sports leadership team, this position ensures that facilities, services, systems, and operational practices support safe, accessible, inclusive, and high-quality experiences that advance student success, wellbeing, belonging, and community.

This position plays a critical role in creating environments where students, employees, members, and guests feel welcome, supported, and able to thrive. Through stewardship of highly utilized recreational spaces and operational assets, the Associate Director strengthens the student experience and supports the department's commitment to service excellence, innovation, education, respect, trust, and continuous improvement.

The Associate Director leads operational strategy across maintenance services, building services, grounds, fitness equipment services, facility stewardship, asset management, and space optimization. The position establishes service standards, manages budgets and resources, oversees vendor and contracted services, uses data and performance metrics to guide decision-making, and advances operational practices that improve reliability, efficiency, customer satisfaction, accessibility, sustainability, and long-term resource stewardship.

A central responsibility for this role is providing operational leadership for departmental risk management, emergency preparedness, and operational continuity. The Associate Director serves as the department's primary liaison to Oregon State University Environmental Health and Safety and Emergency Management and provides strategic oversight for safety protocols, emergency action planning, incident reporting and follow-up, access control, security systems, fire and life safety practices, hazardous materials coordination, regulatory compliance, and accident prevention efforts. This position works across the department to strengthen a culture of safety, preparedness, accountability, and risk-informed decision-making for facilities, programs, services, events, staff, students, and visitors.

The Associate Director supervises professional faculty and classified staff and provides oversight for contract and student employees. The position is responsible for workforce planning, recruitment, onboarding, training, performance management, employee development, and operational coordination. In alignment with Recreational Sports' commitment to student development, this role also supports student employment as a high-impact learning experience that builds leadership capacity, career readiness, transferable skills, and a sense of belonging.

As part of the broader Student Activities and Recreation operations structure, the Associate Director collaborates closely with departmental, divisional, and university partners to align facilities and risk priorities. The position contributes to departmental strategic planning and supports priorities aligned with Recreational Sports, Student Activities and Recreation, Student Affairs, and Oregon State University's strategic plan.

This Associate Director role has broad administrative responsibility, leadership visibility, and a meaningful impact on student wellbeing and campus community. The position reports to the Director of Finance, Facilities and Operations in the Student Activities and Recreation portfolio.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provides leadership and administrative oversight for all Facility Services operations supporting Recreational Sports, including Maintenance Services, Building Services, Fitness Equipment Services, and Grounds Services.
• Provide strategic leadership and oversight for the department's comprehensive risk management program, supporting safe operations across facilities, programs, services, and events.
• Provide leadership for the management and optimization of Recreational Sports facilities, grounds, equipment, and operational assets that support student engagement, wellbeing, recreation, and campus community programs.
• Supervise professional faculty and provide oversight of classified, contract, and student employees within Facility Services operations.
• Develop, implement, and assess comprehensive preventive and predictive maintenance programs for facilities, infrastructure, building systems, and equipment to ensure reliability, regulatory compliance, and optimal performance.
• Lead the development, implementation, assessment, and continuous improvement of departmental risk management, emergency preparedness, and safety protocols in accordance with university standards and industry best practices.
• Lead operational facility planning efforts, including space utilization, functional improvements, accessibility enhancements, and long-range operational needs to ensure facilities effectively support departmental priorities and service delivery.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in management, business, recreation, facilities management, natural resources, science, or a related field appropriate to the position.
• Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in facilities and operations management within a large, complex organization, demonstrating increasing levels of responsibility and achievement.
• Five (5) years of full-time professional supervisory experience, including responsibility for hiring, training, developing, coaching, and evaluating employees.
• Demonstrated knowledge of facility operations, maintenance programs, service delivery, operational planning, and continuous improvement of facility systems and services.
• Demonstrated experience assessing operational issues, analyzing alternatives, and making sound, consistent decisions in support of organizational objectives.
• Demonstrated knowledge and application of risk management principles and practices.
• Proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a broad range of internal and external partners, stakeholders, and collaborators.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and within a collaborative team environment.
• Strong organizational, project coordination, and workload management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and operational demands.
• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Demonstrated commitment to fostering an inclusive, accessible, and welcoming environment for individuals from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
• Certification in CPR/AED, First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogens/Universal Precautions within 90 days of hire.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in higher education, campus recreation, or a similarly complex organizational environment.
• Experience providing leadership and oversight of facilities operations, maintenance, custodial services, and grounds management.
• Demonstrated knowledge of facilities management principles, including facility condition assessment, preventive maintenance, asset lifecycle management, and operational performance measurement.
• Experience developing and managing operating budgets with multiple funding sources.
• Working knowledge of building systems and infrastructure, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and related facility operations.
• Experience utilizing facility or work order management systems to support maintenance planning, service delivery, and operational efficiency.
• Knowledge of applicable regulatory requirements and industry standards related to workplace safety, accessibility, and facilities operations (e.g., OSHA, ADA).
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with skilled trades personnel, service employees, professional staff, administrators, contractors, and external partners.
• Experience with strategic planning, operational assessment, and the development of long-range priorities that support organizational goals.

Working Conditions/Schedule:
• Primarily on-site in Corvallis, OR.
• May require evenings, weekends, and on-call response for emergencies.
• Exposure to active facility environments, construction, and weather conditions.
• Designated as an essential employee during campus disruptions or emergencies.

Salary Range:

$100,000-$110,000
