DePuy Synthes is looking for a driven Associate Development Engineer to join our Hip New Product Development Team to be based out of Warsaw, IN or Leeds, United Kingdom.

Purpose:

You will work closely with a hardworking and multi-functional group of engineers to design and develop new implants and surgical instruments to advance the state of the art in hip surgery. Associate Development Engineers play a vital role as a core member of the new product development team. Under direct supervision, they are responsible for the design and development of new products which have limited scope and complexity, which support departmental/DePuy Synthes goals and objectives. From feasibility through commercialization the Associate Development Engineer will focus on manufacturability, supporting the engineering team in defining design attributes and transferring the product design to production.

This role would suit an individual looking to start their career as an Engineer in an R&D role within the Medical Devices sector. Key Responsibilities:
  • Generate design concepts and prototypes, perform design evaluations (such as tolerance analysis, FEA, simulated use testing, etc.), create risk analysis documentation and support the development of product verification/validation plans and testing.
  • Work with the design team, manufacturing engineering, and suppliers to optimize designs for manufacturability and then collaborate with Supply Chain partners to transfer those designs into the production environment.
  • Work with Project Management to define timelines for development activities and provide regular updates on the status of those activities.
  • Develop an in-depth knowledge of our product lines and detailed knowledge of various musculoskeletal pathologies.
  • A high level of teamwork across multiple functions and geographies will be required. Proven analytical problem solving and decision-making skills are needed, alongside effective collaboration at all levels within the business.


Experience, skills & proficiency required:
  • A bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in a relevant Engineering subject is required.
  • 0-2 years of work experience required.
  • Engineering design, development and analysis skills.
  • Ability to interface effectively with project teams, management, and surgeons.
  • Strong project management and communication skills with a proven track record of leading a variety of development projects through to completion is desirable for the role.
  • Ability to effectively communicate concepts, ideas and knowledge to other individuals, surgeons, customers and/or teams, and work effectively as a team member.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks and manage a varied workload.


Preferred:
  • Demonstrates an understanding of basic engineering and scientific principles; implements principles, with guidance.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of and may participate in the creation and/or revision of either computer generated 2D/3D engineering solid models and drawings in accordance with company standards including familiarity with Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) and weld specifications.
  • Develops a basic awareness of the basic concepts of Design Excellence (e.g., Functional Product Map, Voice of the Customer (VOC), Quality Function Deployment (QFD), Multidirectional Product Plans, Thought Maps, etc.).
  • Understands concept generation, technical feasibility and design engineering techniques; is familiar with prototyping techniques.
  • Consults with manager to address issues and situations as they occur; includes appropriate stakeholders in the decision-making process; makes decisions for basic situations.
  • Possess a knowledge of simple engineering calculations or simulations to verify detail design and minimize physical testing.
  • Possesses a basic understanding of materials (surgical instrument materials and biomaterials), with the ability to propose a rationale of appropriate selection criteria.
  • This position may require up to 10% travel both domestic and international. This position will be based in either Warsaw, IN or Leeds, UK.


Johnson & Johnson announced plans to separate our Orthopaedics business to establish a standalone orthopaedics company, operating as DePuy Synthes. The process of the planned separation is anticipated to be completed within 18 to 24 months, subject to legal requirements, including consultation with works councils and other employee representative bodies, as may be required, regulatory approvals and other customary conditions and approvals.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is :
$64,000.00 - $102,350.00

Additional Description for Pay Transparency:
Subject to the terms of their respective plans, employees are eligible to participate in the Company's consolidated retirement plan (pension) and savings plan (401(k)).

This position is eligible to participate in the Company's long-term incentive program.

Subject to the terms of their respective policies and date of hire, employees are eligible for the following time off benefits:

Vacation -120 hours per calendar year

Sick time - 40 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Colorado -48 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Washington -56 hours per calendar year

Holiday pay, including Floating Holidays -13 days per calendar year

Work, Personal and Family Time - up to 40 hours per calendar year

Parental Leave - 480 hours within one year of the birth/adoption/foster care of a child

Bereavement Leave - 240 hours for an immediate family member: 40 hours for an extended family member per calendar year

Caregiver Leave - 80 hours in a 52-week rolling period10 days

Volunteer Leave - 32 hours per calendar year

Military Spouse Time-Off - 80 hours per calendar year
