Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Manage and oversee outside counsel for medical malpractice defense cases.
  • Collaborate with Third-Party Administrator on claims management.
  • Develop and recommend defense strategies based on claims evaluation.
  • Assess exposure and set indemnity reserves for claims.
  • Guide claims toward appropriate resolutions and coordinate case management reports.
  • Audit outside counsel billing and approve relevant documentation.
  • Identify claim patterns and provide risk management recommendations.

Duties & Responsibilities

General tasks and responsibilities will include:

General tasks and responsibilities include direct management and oversight of outside counsel medical malpractice defense firms, collaborating with Third-Party Administrator providing claims management services, developing appropriate defense strategies, recommending medical experts, setting indemnity reserves, assessing exposure of claims, and guiding claims towards appropriate resolutions. The claims counsel role also includes reviewing and auditing outside counsel billing, approving case management reports and coordinating claims presentations to senior management.

Additional duties may include identifying claim patterns, collaborating with senior staff and management on risk management and quality assurance issues, as well as making recommendations for loss control and mitigation of risk.

Minimum Qualifications
1. Admission and active membership to New York State Bar; and
a. Three (3) years of experience and background in the practice of law subsequent to admission to the Bar
in matters of litigation, negligence, corporate law, contracts, real estate, labor relations, labor law and
employee relations; or
b. Two (2) years of experience and background in the practice of law subsequent to admission to the Bar in
matters of litigation, negligence, corporate law, contracts, real estate, labor relations, employment law
and employee relations; and two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in a professional or
managerial capacity in respective areas applicable to the general body of law, specialties or practice.
