Job Summary

The Assistant Vice President (AVP) for Growth Marketing provides strategic leadership for Old Dominion University's integrated growth marketing function, with responsibility for advancing enrollment marketing growth, strengthening brand awareness, and elevating ODU's market position. The AVP leads the coordinated development and execution of data-informed marketing strategies, brand-building initiatives, audience-centered campaigns, creative content, digital marketing, media production, and marketing operations that support the university's enrollment and brand awareness goals.

The AVP ensures that campus enrollment marketing, ODUGlobal online enrollment marketing, and university brand marketing operate as a cohesive, high-performing portfolio. The position provides leadership to a multidisciplinary team of marketing, creative, content, digital, social media, media production, and project management professionals, fostering collaboration, innovation, accountability, and excellence. Working within the cross-collaborative Division of Digital Transformation and Technology and through partnerships across the university, the region, and with external vendors, the AVP aligns marketing strategy with institutional priorities, audience needs, competitive opportunities, and measurable outcomes.

This role is responsible for ensuring that ODU's marketing efforts are strategically focused, brand-aligned, inclusive, accessible, creatively compelling, and performance-driven, with the goal of increasing student interest, improving enrollment outcomes, enhancing public awareness, and strengthening the university long term.

Hiring Range: $160,000-$165,000, commensurate with education, experience, and qualifications.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree from an accredited institution in marketing, communications, business administration, higher education administration, public relations, digital media, journalism, organizational leadership, or a related field required. A bachelor's degree in a related field with significant experience equivalent to a master's degree may also be considered.
  • Considerable knowledge of higher education marketing, enrollment marketing, brand strategy, digital marketing, audience segmentation, campaign planning, creative strategy, content strategy, social media, media production, marketing analytics, and market research.
  • Considerable knowledge of current trends and best practices in student recruitment, brand awareness, reputation building, marketing automation, CRM-supported communications, digital advertising, web engagement, and emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence.
  • Demonstrated ability to use data, analytics, market research, audience insights, enrollment trends, and campaign performance to guide strategy, evaluate effectiveness, optimize marketing investments, and improve outcomes. Ability to establish performance measures for enrollment marketing, brand marketing, digital advertising, content, social media, and campaign effectiveness.
  • Strong leadership, supervision, communication, writing, editing, presentation, project management, collaboration, and relationship-management skills. Ability to lead a multidisciplinary team,
  • Ability to work effectively in a shared-services and cross-functional environment, coordinating across the institution, with vendors, and other internal and external partners. Ability to lead through change, manage competing priorities, exercise sound judgment, foster collaboration, and advance ODU's enrollment growth and brand awareness goals.
  • Significant progressively responsible leadership experience in marketing, enrollment marketing, brand marketing, digital marketing, communications, creative strategy, higher education marketing, or a related area.
  • Considerable experience developing, leading, and evaluating integrated marketing strategies that support enrollment growth, audience engagement, brand awareness, reputation building, and measurable marketing outcomes.
  • Considerable experience supervising professional staff and leading multidisciplinary teams, preferably including creative, content, digital marketing, social media, media production, project management, and enrollment marketing functions.
  • Working experience using data, analytics, CRM systems, marketing automation platforms, web analytics, digital advertising platforms, market research, and audience insights to guide strategy and improve campaign performance.
  • Working experience managing marketing budgets, vendor relationships, media plans, creative workflows, project timelines, and cross-functional initiatives involving multiple stakeholders.


This is a remote position, which will require regular travel to campus. Due to travel requirements, budgetary constraints may limit where the successful candidate can reside.

Preferred Qualifications

Working experience includes leadership in a higher education marketing environment, especially with responsibility for enrollment marketing, brand marketing, online education marketing, student recruitment, or university-wide marketing strategy.

Conditions of Employment

This position is required to complete a Statement of Personal Economic Interest upon hire in accordance with the Code of Virginia.

This is a remote position, requiring a traditional 40-hour work week. Computer equipment will be supplied for remote work; high-speed internet is the responsibility of the employee.
  • The equipment provided to staff with approved telework agreements enables them to deliver vital services to University faculty, staff, and students from remote locations.
  • Many of our operations can and should continue as usual, even when the main physical campus is closed.
  • Therefore, all division employees with an approved telework agreement are generally expected to work during official University closures.


Should travel be required, budgetary constraints may limit where the successful candidate can reside. In addition, existing payroll limitations on locations a remote employee may work from could limit the selection of the final candidate.
