Position Overview
Primary Function of Organizational Unit The Division of Institutional Advancement advances a culture of philanthropy through the engagement of alumni, faculty, staff, students, parents and friends (both individually and in the corporate community) in support of the Institution's mission of preparing students to become global leaders and practitioners who transform communities. By using creative strategies to enhance the University's image, the office promotes the overall mission of North Carolina Central University to its external publics in order to solicit and acquire philanthropic support
Primary Purpose of Position The Assistant Vice Chancellor for Development provides senior-level strategic leadership for advancing North Carolina Central University's fundraising priorities and philanthropic goals. Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement and serving as a member of the senior leadership team, the position works closely with university senior administrators, department leadership, and advancement colleagues to secure financial support for institutional priorities. The Assistant Vice Chancellor manages a portfolio of approximately 70-90 prospects, develops and implements individualized fundraising strategies, cultivates and strengthens donor relationships, solicits gifts primarily in excess of $25,000, and ensures effective donor stewardship. The position also provides leadership, strategic direction, and oversight to a team of 5-7 Directors of Development, supporting the coordination and execution of comprehensive fundraising initiatives that advance the University's mission and strategic objectives.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities - Demonstrated ability to provide strategic leadership, effective management, and clear direction to staff while establishing and achieving ambitious fundraising goals.
- Ability to build, develop, and lead high-performing teams that are motivated, collaborative, accountable, and focused on achieving organizational and fundraising objectives.
- Demonstrated success as a major gift and principal gift fundraiser, with the ability to cultivate relationships, solicit significant philanthropic support, and steward donors effectively.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with donors, senior leadership, faculty, staff, volunteers, and external stakeholders.
- Thorough knowledge of the full spectrum of fundraising programs, including annual giving, planned and deferred giving, capital campaigns, and individual, corporate, and foundation giving.
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex details and competing priorities with efficient work habits, sound judgment, discipline, flexibility, and attention to detail.
- Outstanding organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, establish priorities, and consistently meet deadlines.
Minimum Education/Experience - Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred.
- A minimum of eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in development or fundraising, with demonstrated success as both a manager and frontline fundraiser.
- Experience in a higher education environment is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience in cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major and principal gift prospects is preferred.
- Travel is required, including occasional evening and weekend work, to support donor engagement, University events, and fundraising activities.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties
Function Strategic Leadership and Administration
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function. - Lead the advancement team in the development, planning, and implementation of short- and long-term fundraising strategies designed to secure philanthropic support from individuals through major, principal, and planned gifts.
- Collaborate with the Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement and Associate Vice Chancellor to establish clear, measurable fundraising goals that are both aspirational and achievable and align with the University's strategic priorities.
- Develop and implement strategies to strengthen the major and principal gifts pipeline and increase philanthropic support for institutional priorities.
- Provide strategic leadership and guidance to development staff to ensure coordinated, effective, and results-driven fundraising efforts.
- Monitor fundraising performance and progress toward established goals and recommend adjustments to strategies and priorities as needed.
Function Special Projects and Strategic Initiatives
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function. - Promote and foster an organizational culture that encourages, values, and rewards collaboration across the Division of Institutional Advancement and throughout the University.
- Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major and principal gift donors and prospects in collaboration with faculty, staff, and volunteers, ensuring all fundraising activities follow established donor clearance processes and University protocols.
Function Training Support and Organizational Development
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function. - Mentor, train, supervise, and evaluate development staff, fostering professional growth, accountability, and high performance. Remain current on best practices and emerging trends in the development profession and evaluate innovative strategies and practices for potential implementation.
- Ensure the effective and efficient use of time and University resources, including strategic planning and coordination of travel to maximize donor engagement and fundraising opportunities. Maintain accurate and timely records in the prospect management database, including donor strategies, proposals, contacts, solicitation activity, and fundraising results.
