Description of JobAbout the Work UnitThe Maintenance Engineering Unit supports the Maintenance Sections in ensuring the transportation infrastructure advances to and remains in a "Good State of Repair." This support is provided in several forms including expertise, facilitation, coordination, and innovation in the development and deployment of Maintenance activities. The Unit also provides technical guidance to various programs in Maintenance and works to develop, analyze, and solve technical issues facing the Maintenance Sections.
The Unit focuses on:- Statewide preservation programs for bridge, pavement, and water quality control measures
- Provides support in roadside vegetation management along with water quality
- Manages the Statewide Maintenance Project program delivering and advising on infrastructure projects
- Supports the winter operations program including the management of 3rd party liquid and granular testing contracts, approved product specifications for winter materials
- Oversight of the Managed Lanes maintenance program
About the PositionThe Assistant State Maintenance Engineer position manages the Maintenance Engineering program. This position provides guidance and support to the Maintenance Sections through maintenance project development and design, project management, and serving as the Statewide pavement and bridge preservation coordinator. This position brings expertise in infrastructure management and maintenance to develop Statewide programs and provides technical decisions on project development and compliance with regulatory reporting and requirements for the unit.
The position continually develops Statewide maintenance preservation programs for pavements and bridges in alignment of national trends relying on the Federal focus of preservation and asset management.
Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Develop and design of maintenance projects throughout the State and applies current engineering principles and theories, design specifications, and federal, state, and local design standards to develop safe, efficient, and economical project designs;
- Lead a team of engineering tech positions and/or consultant designers in the development of projects and serve as the Maintenance Project Resident Engineer;
- Direct and manage all activities and personnel involved in the development of plans, specifications, and estimates for the design of Maintenance transportation projects;
- Assure that the design complies with: the project scope, schedule, and budget, and current design engineering criteria, standards, practices, theory and procedures and is professionally certifiable in accordance with Federal and State standards;
- Create and execute preventative maintenance strategies for the Department;
- Prepare preliminary and final designs for maintenance projects;
- Calculate quantities and make engineering decisions related to project scopes;
- Assist the Regions, Maintenance Sections and the structural asset management unit with identifying and prioritizing needed structural work for individual structures or groups of structures;
- Coordinate maintenance of special bridge crews with Staff Bridge inspection unit to manage the essential repairs lists;
- Manage the preventative maintenance program including inventory, planning and coordinating work order creation and reporting and development sustainable maintenance;
- Organize and coordinate scoping meetings, FIR and FOR meetings, work with Region and HQ specialty units to clear the project before advertisement;
- Provide technical assistance and coordination to staff in the Materials and Geotechnical Branch, Maintenance Sections and Division of Maintenance & Operations.

Work Environment:- Your schedule will primarily be 8:00 am - 5:00 pm work hours, Monday-Friday, but we are flexible to meet your work/life balance needs while ensuring CDOT business needs are met.
- You will likely work a hybrid schedule with a combination of in-office and remote work.
- Travel in-state and occasional overnight travel throughout Colorado to attend meetings and trainings.
- Required to operate CDOT vehicles
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal RightsMinimum Qualifications- Current, valid licensure as a Professional Engineer from the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers, and Professional Land Surveyors.
AND- At least two years of professional work experience in civil engineering, preferably on transportation projects, one year of which must have been as a licensed Professional Engineer.
Substitutions- Appropriate education in addition to that required for the professional engineer license will substitute for the required general experience on a year-for-year basis.
