Position Summary:

The Office of Research helps to facilitate life-saving biomedical research at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Nine distinct units provide specialized support to meet the administrative needs of our basic science, clinical, and translational investigators and research staff. Together we coordinate, regulate, and monitor research studies as well as provide high quality services for investigative teams.

As a unit within the Office of Research, the Biomedical Resource Center (BRC) is the centralized animal facility at the Medical College of Wisconsin, providing laboratory animal housing and care as well as research support and space. The BRC occupies 95,000 ft2 and is staffed by 30-40 animal health technicians, 3 veterinarians (BRC Director and 2 Staff Veterinarians), 3 surgical team members (veterinary technicians), 3 Animal Husbandry Supervisors, a Veterinary Technical Services Supervisor, and an administrative team. More than 170 principal investigators at MCW, Versiti Blood Research Institute, and the Zablocki VA Medical Center depend on the services and facilities of the BRC for animal husbandry and study space. The facility has been continuously accredited by the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care since 1968.

The Medical College of Wisconsin is seeking a Staff Veterinarian to join the BRC team. This individual will also be appointed an Assistant or Associate Professor in an academic department based on professional experience and academic/professional achievements. The Staff Veterinarian works with other members of the BRC team under the direction of the Director and Assistant Provost of the BRC. This individual will be expected to contribute to the design, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of programs for veterinary medical care, animal husbandry, and animal facility maintenance that meet or exceed regulatory requirements and current accepted professional standards. The Staff Veterinarian manages animal husbandry and veterinary technical personnel to achieve predetermined goals through supervision, coordination, and performance management. The Staff Veterinarian works closely with faculty, research staff, and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee in accomplishing program objectives.

Position Highlights:

• Provide primary veterinary medical care to animals procured/maintained for MCW research and educational programs.
• Design and implement preventive veterinary medical care programs for such animals, ensuring appropriate methods for exclusion, detection, and control of infectious disease and animal morbidity/mortality.
• Assist BRC Director/MCW Attending Veterinarian in oversight of research and teaching activities involving animals, ensuring compliance to regulatory requirements and current professional standards.
• Provide direction and oversight to BRC supervisors and veterinary technical staff, ensuring appropriate animal husbandry, animal facility maintenance, and technical services. This includes providing training, performance evaluations, and making hiring and promotional recommendations.
• Consult with faculty/investigative staff on the use of animals in research and teaching, including, but not limited to animal model development, appropriate animal biomethodology, and methods to minimize animal pain and distress.
• Serve as a veterinary reviewer for Animal Use Applications and amendments.
• As required, serve as a regular or alternate member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and the Institutional Biosafety Committee.
• Advise the BRC Director on staffing, equipment, and budget issues.
• Participate in the training of investigative and animal care personnel.
• Provide services to MCW affiliates as needed consistent with interinstitutional agreements.

Knowledge - Skills - Abilities

• A thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of veterinary medicine
• A thorough knowledge of the normal biology, health and disease of the various animal species normally used in research and teaching.
• A knowledge of commonly used rodent breeding techniques and systems.
• Knowledge of, and experience with, the specialized equipment and materials used in veterinary medicine, and in the care and maintenance of research animals.
• A thorough knowledge of all applicable rule, regulations, policies, and guidelines relating to the use of research animals.
• The ability to exercise judgment and discretion in the interpretation and application of policies and regulations.
• The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Biomedical Resource Center personnel, investigative staff, institutional administrators, individuals from other institutions, and the general public.
• Must be able to work under pressure and still maintain composure and harmonious relationships with others.
• Must be able to work independently, however, must also be able to work as a member of a team dedicated to providing healthy animals for experimental use.

Qualifications

• Minimum Required Education: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent from an AVMA-accredited veterinary school
• Minimum Required Experience: 2 years of post-education, clinical experience in laboratory animal practice.
• Preferred Experience: Completion of an American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) recognized laboratory animal medicine residency and ACLAM board eligible or board certified.
• Field of Study: Biomedical Research, Veterinary Care
• Certification: Certification by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine preferred
• Licensure: Licensed to practice Veterinary Medicine in at least one state #LI-NK1
