HIGH SCHOOL ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL
JOB DESCRIPTION
Responsible to: High School Principal Qualifications:
• Hold a valid New York State School Building Leader (SBL) certificate.
• Minimum of five (5) years of successful teaching experience; prior administrative experience
preferred.
• Demonstrated knowledge of high school curriculum, instruction, graduation requirements,
Regents examinations, and New York State learning standards.
• Experience working with students with disabilities and knowledge of Committee on Special
Education (CSE) processes and applicable state and federal regulations.
• Demonstrated ability to foster a safe, inclusive, and positive school culture that promotes
academic achievement, student engagement, and staff professional growth.
• Strong knowledge of effective instructional practices, assessment, data analysis, and school
improvement processes.
• Ability to supervise, coach, and evaluate instructional and support staff.
• Knowledge of student discipline, restorative practices, attendance, and intervention strategies.
• Excellent organizational, leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, staff, administration, community
members, and outside agencies.
• Ability to interpret and administer Board policies, district procedures, state regulations, and
negotiated agreements.

Responsibilities:
• Assist the Principal in providing instructional leadership and maintaining an effective
educational program.
• Conduct classroom observations and evaluations in accordance with the district's teacher
evaluation process and provide timely, meaningful feedback to staff.
• Assist with curriculum implementation, instructional improvement, and professional
learning initiatives.
• Assist in the implementation and coordination of the Multi-Tiered System of Supports
(MTSS) by collaborating with staff to monitor student academic, behavioral, and social
emotional progress, identify interventions, and support data-driven decision-making.
• Supervise, assign, and evaluate teacher aides to ensure effective implementation of
instructional and behavioral supports and compliance with district expectations and
assigned responsibilities.
• Supervise and evaluate professional and support staff assigned to the building.
• Assist in the development of the master schedule, student scheduling, Regents
examination administration, new course development and graduation planning.
• Monitor student academic progress, attendance, behavior, and graduation requirements
while coordinating appropriate interventions.
• Work collaboratively with school counselors, psychologists, social workers, CSE staff, and other support personnel to address student's academic, behavioral, social, and emotional needs.
• Assist in developing, implementing, and enforcing the student Code of Conduct while
promoting restorative practices and positive student behavior.
• Investigate student discipline matters, including Dignity for All Students Act (DASA)
complaints, and other student conduct issues, and complete all required documentation.
• Supervise school operations, including arrival and dismissal, hallways, cafeteria,
assemblies, fire drills, lockdown drills, and other emergency procedures.
• Assist with the planning and implementation of the opening and closing of the school year.
• Support the administration of state assessments, Regents examinations, Advanced
Placement (AP) examinations, and other testing programs.
• Promote strong communication and positive relationships with parents, families, and
community partners.
• Coordinate the daily assignment and placement of substitute teachers and support staff to ensure appropriate classroom coverage and the continuity of instructional and support
services.
• Attend, supervise, and provide administrative oversight for after-school and evening events, activities, athletic contests, performances, ceremonies, and student celebrations to ensure the safety, security, and orderly operation of school-sponsored programs.
• Foster a positive, safe, and inclusive learning environment that supports student
achievement, leadership, and well-being.
• Assume the responsibilities of the Principal during the Principal's absence.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or Superintendent.
