Assistant Principal of Operations

Job Summary

The Assistant Principal of Operations role is an integral part of the Information and Operations team, ensuring all non-instructional components of the school's daily operations are effectively managed and executed. The starting salary range for this role is $113,839-$125,821. This is a full-time, fully on-site role based at Webb Campus with an anticipated start date of June 2026.

About the Role
The School Operations Team at KIPP DC creates the conditions for schools to thrive by driving strong attendance and enrollment, building and maintaining effective school-wide systems, leading safety and crisis response, and delivering high-quality service to students, families, and staff. The Assistant Principal of Operations (APO) serves as a strategic partner to the Principal and a key member of the school leadership team at one of KIPP DC's Early Childhood, Elementary or Middle schools. The APO leads all non-instructional systems that enable a strong, joyful, and academically focused school environment, including student enrollment, data systems, compliance, finance, facilities, safety, and daily operations.

Location and Type of Work
As a headquarters team that is focused on being responsive to our schools and meeting the needs of our students and families, we approach our work in a way that reflects these priorities. Schools operate in person and our students and families rely on us for in-person support which requires this position to be fully onsite.
As an Assistant Principal, this position must also ensure adherence to established internal control policies and procedures, and must be on-site from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm.

Responsibilities
The percentages for each key responsibility are estimates, and other duties may be assigned. Flexibility and responsiveness are encouraged to accommodate organizational needs.

Academic Operations (35% of time)
  • Enrollment, Student Recruitment, and Family Engagement
    • Serve as a full-time and engaged member of the school leadership team, working alongside the principal to ensure fulfillment of KIPP DC's mission.
    • Lead student recruitment, enrollment, and re-enrollment strategy and execution to achieve 100% enrollment and strong matriculation to FDOS attendance.
    • Develop and drive a comprehensive outreach plan in partnership with school and regional teams, including campaigns, events, and ongoing family engagement opportunities.
    • Build staff investment in a school value proposition and ensure consistent, high-quality communication with prospective and current families.
    • Support school leadership in family-facing communications, including newsletters, events, and key enrollment messaging.
  • Data Partnership
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to maintain accurate and up-to-date student records (e.g., contact info, attendance, grades, transcripts, report cards) and lead the coordination of assessments and testing logistics.
    • Oversee the development of the yearly school schedule, class rosters, and homeroom assignments based on staffing and curricular requirements. Work with the SIS team to ensure student data is provided accurately and on time.
  • Assessment Strategy
    • Own and execute the schoolwide assessment plan, ensuring all logistics, scheduling, staff training and communication are in place for smooth administration across internal and external assessments.
    • Ensure assessment data, accommodations, and related requirements are accurately managed in partnership with regional teams.
  • Attendance Strategy
    • Lead student attendance strategy and systems in collaboration with school leaders.
    • Ensure accurate, timely attendance data is captured daily and readily available to all relevant stakeholders.
    • Hold bi-weekly attendance meetings to review data, determine necessary interventions, and strategize with school leadership and operations staff in order to attain our goal of >95% daily attendance.
    • Create an escalation plan for chronically absent students and lead the team in active engagement with families to address.
  • Class Coverage
    • Establish and uphold clear protocols for staff absences and coverage, ensuring continuity of instruction and strong operational execution each day.


Campus Operations (20% of time)
  • Directly manage and develop the Operations Manager and Operations Associate at your school. Collaborate with the other APOs on campus regularly to ensure alignment on decision-making that may impact the campus as a whole.
  • Oversee core operational functions including facilities, food service, technology, procurement, safety, and vendor coordination to ensure a safe, efficient, and well-functioning campus.
  • Serve as the Cost-Center Manager in Workday, working closely with the Requisitioner (Operations Manager) and school leader to ensure all spending is accurately accounted for in the system.
  • Collaborate with the school leader in budget development, monitor fiscal policies, and daily procurement processes.
  • Ensure effective IT coordination, and compliance with health, safety, and workplace regulations, and liaise with HR for payroll and benefits administration.
  • Communicate and track renovation, maintenance, and space needs to the HDQ facilities team, track school assets and inventory, and manage the quality of equipment.

Compliance (15% of time)
  • Set the vision and systems for compliance across enrollment, health, attendance, assessments, ESSA programs, Homeless Youth, ELL, and student records, ensuring clarity of roles, timelines, and expectations for the team.
  • Partner with regional teams (S3, Data, SIS) to align on school requirements, interpret policy changes, and ensure strong execution at the school level.
  • Hold the operations team accountable for accuracy and timeliness of all compliance-related documentation and reporting.
  • Serve as the escalation point for complex or sensitive compliance issues.

Extracurricular Events (15% of time)
  • Oversee the development of logistics for extracurricular activities, athletics, field trips, special events, and visitor management.
  • Verify student-athlete eligibility, coordinate athletic logistics with the regional athletics leader, and ensure compliance with KIPP DC policies and relevant governing bodies.
  • Manage the operational staffing structure to oversee and support evening and weekend events or facility usage by external vendors.

Safety and Security (15% of time)
  • Liaise with the regional safety team to manage onsite security vendors, ensuring student safety through guard rotations, emergency equipment maintenance, and compliance with safety protocols.
  • Collaborate with administrative staff to establish and update emergency response team protocols and ensure the campus is fully informed of and trained on all safety procedures.
  • Cultivate relationships with community partners and local officials to support city and network-wide safety initiatives.


Requirements & Preferences

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • A minimum of seven years of experience in administration and operations
  • Proven project management skills as it relates to the creation of different systems and structures
  • Ability to work collaboratively across multiple teams throughout the network

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in business administration or related education field
  • Experience managing $1M+ budget
  • At least three years in a school operations leadership position or experience in school leadership (e.g., Principal, VP, or Dean); or 5+ years in strategy/operations leadership role
  • Ability to convey complex technical concepts and solutions to broad audiences
  • Spanish Language Fluency

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to travel to a KIPP DC school
  • Availability to work outside of normal business hours or weekends
