Full Job Description

Full-Time position supporting the National Science Foundation managed United States Antarctic Program as part of the Antarctic Support Contract (ASC). Assistant Facilities Maintenance Supervisor will assist in planning, supervision, and execution of maintenance activities under the supervision of the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor. Deploys to McMurdo Station in rotation with other full-time Facilities Maintenance staff, providing direct supervision of Facilities Maintenance shops and personnel.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Ensure safety is the highest priority.
  • Implement and maintain Work Center Safety Program and participate in ASC safety objectives
  • Assist in planning, supervision, and operation of Facilities Maintenance Shops.
  • Serve as on station supervisor while deployed, providing direct supervision of Facilities Maintenance shops and personnel
  • Provide Facilities Maintenance Supervisor with status updates on maintenance work, engineering investigations and other activities as directed
  • Assist in development of annual performance plans including staffing plans, material requirements and the basis of estimate for the budget
  • Coordinate revision and creation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), working with Trades shops to ensure awareness of and adherence to SOP’s, and to identify and resolve gaps or inaccuracies.
  • Develop FMC training for seasonal staff and a training plan to ensure personnel are trained on FMC safety practices, operations, procedures and best practices
  • Review job descriptions regularly to ensure they are up to date and qualifications meet applicable regulations and laws on the contract.
  • Develop and keep updated qualifications matrix to include specific USAP training requirements for each job category
  • Communicate pre-season expectations to staff and prepare and deliver performance assessments
  • Coordinates with the Work Order Supervisor to ensure preventive maintenance and work order documentation is maintained.
  • Maintain effective communication between departments and represent department as needed at operational meetings
  • Assist with hiring of contract deploying personnel by identifying, interviewing and assisting in final selection of candidates
  • Assist with the ordering of resupply materials for the department to maintain adequate inventory on station
  • Work with Project/Construction staff to coordinate and execute construction projects, and to identify Facilities Maintenance interests and concerns as needed
  • Perform quality review of work and all related documentation including Maximo work order review for consistency, accuracy and completeness
  • Communicate professionally, both orally and in writing, with subordinates as needed to relay information they need in order to be successful in their jobs. This includes, but is not limited to, staff meetings, performance appraisals, job requirements, division metrics, Quality Assurance procedures, and safety practices.
  • Interact with National Science Foundation, military and other agency officials, both over the telephone and in person, in a professional and tactful manner.
  • Work with Human Resources to address conflict or personnel issues as they arise
  • Handle confidential matters (personnel actions, management reports, etc.) in accordance with management policy and with the highest degree of professionalism
  • Comply with all ASC Environmental, Safety and Health (ESH), Waste Management and Quality Assurance requirements
  • Perform other duties as required

Required Education, Experience, Certifications and Licenses:

  • BA/BS degree required. Four years’ additional relevant work experience combined with High School diploma/GED will be accepted in lieu of degree.
  • A minimum of six years Facilities maintenance experience, three of which must be at the Foreman level or higher with a progressive increase in responsibility.

Expected Skills and Competencies:

  • Ability to read design drawings, specifications, and diagrams
  • Minimum intermediate level computer skills and Microsoft Office experience to include Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Willingness and ability to learn and effectively utilize computer-based labor, inventory, and maintenance tracking applications
  • Possess the competencies, willingness, and ability to perform the duties of position

Preferred:

  • Intermediate or higher experience with Maximo or other Computerized Maintenance Management System
  • License or certification in one or more Trades
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
  • Degree or Certificate in Construction Management
  • Experience with Alerton Ascent Compass Software
  • Experience with Direct Digital Control (DDC)
  • Experience with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC)
  • Experience with Building Automation Systems
  • Experience with Variable Frequency Drives (VFD)

Physical and/or Other Requirements:

  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods
  • Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica
  • Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employer
  • Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF
  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position.
  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold as required by the position.
  • Must participate in community programs, such as house-mouse (chores), daisy-picking (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives.
  • Valid Drivers License issued in the United States
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.

Compensation Details:

US $82,000 - $97,000
