Are you looking for an opportunity to put your engineering skills to work on projects that make a difference in the community? The City is seeking a motivated and collaborative Assistant Engineer to join our team and help plan, design, and deliver a variety of important public works projects.
What You'll Be Doing:
  • Ensure construction projects comply with regulations and technical standards.
  • Conduct and verify calculations for project designs.
  • Work with engineers, consultants, and contractors, manage progress, and handle approvals.
  • Create technical reports, specifications, right-of-way maps, and contracts.
  • Investigate field conditions and support construction inspections.

The Position:
Under general supervision performs civil engineering work of average difficulty to include reviewing plans related to public works construction projects; performs a variety of engineering tasks in the design, construction, contract administration, inspection and maintenance of streets, storm drains, sanitary sewers, water mains and other public works and performs related work as required.

Any combination of training and experience, which would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
  • Bachelors Degree in Engineering or a related field from an accredited college or university or possession of a State of California Engineer in Training Certificate
  • Two years of experience in civil engineering related work.

Special Requirements:
  • A valid Class A California driver's license and acceptable driving record at the time of application and throughout employment in this position.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule to accommodate City needs.

BASED ON THE INFORMATION PRESENTED ON THE APPLICATION MATERIALS, applicants possessing the most suitable qualifications will be invited to a written examination, performance examination, oral interview, and/or other assessment instruments.
Candidates who successfully complete the assessment process for Assistant Engineer will be placed on an eligible list for the classifications, which will remain in effect for at least one year or until an insufficient number of candidates remain on the list.
Current City of Fullerton employees may be given preference during the testing and/or selection process.
All employment offers, including appointment offers to City of Fullerton employees, are conditional based upon the successful completion of the background process. In addition, City of Fullerton employees that are appointed to safety-sensitive classifications will undergo a drug screen.
All new hires will be fingerprinted. Fingerprints are verified by the State of California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Assistant Engineer appointees will serve a 12-month probationary period.
