What is an Assistant Engineer?

Central Hudson is seeking Assistant Engineers to join our Electric Engineering team, Gas Engineering team, or Engineering Rotational Development Program (ERDP). An Assistant Engineer performs engineering assignments related to the planning, scoping, design, construction, operation, maintenance and performance of the company's electric and natural gas systems while factoring in safety, required codes and standards, innovation, and modernization.

What does an Assistant Engineer do?
  • Completes and performs engineering work for electric and/or gas transmission and distribution infrastructure/facilities
  • Develops long term plans for the electric and gas transmission and distribution systems including distribution automation and integration of renewable resources
  • Reviews and investigates performance of the company's electric and/or gas facilities and recommends remedial measures
  • Analyzes and optimizes inspection and maintenance of the electric and gas transmission and distribution systems
  • Develops and recommends statements of engineering practices, service standards, and equipment capability standards to be used as a basis for system reinforcement, design, and operation
  • Develops, supports and/or oversees and prioritizes capital projects and programs
  • Explores planning methods and procedures of the electric and gas systems
  • Improves distribution design standards and system planning practices
  • Provides technical support for gas & electric operations
  • Assists with projects and other tasks as needed
  • Engineers in the ERDP complete the work outlined above while participating in four rotational assignments in key operational and strategic areas of our utility in both gas and electric over a two-year period.
  • Supports storm/emergency restoration efforts


What does it take to be an Assistant Engineer?

Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and the ability to learn new computer software programs quickly
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and quantitative skills
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with innovation in mind
  • Flexibility to multitask and operate in a fast-paced environment
  • Must perform all tasks safely and design with safety in mind
  • Valid driver's license

Preferred:
  • Field of study in electrical, mechanical, or civil engineering
  • Knowledge of and/or experience in the electric and gas utility industry
