POSITION: Assistant Director of Secondary Teaching and Learning, Office of Academics

REPORTS TO: Director of Secondary Teaching and Learning

SUPERVISES: Certified Staff as Appropriate

POSITION SUMMARY: The Assistant Director of Secondary Teaching and Learning assists the Director of Secondary Teaching and Learning by providing oversight for all 6-12 instructional programs and initiatives in the district. The Assistant Director works alongside the Director and department personnel to ensure equitable access to a rigorous standards-based curriculum, effective teaching practices, and data-driven interventions to raise student achievement and close persistent achievement gaps. The Assistant Director focuses on implementation of the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of 6-12 curriculum, assessment, and instructional practices in order to inform the overall district strategy aimed at increasing student performance, enhancing classroom instruction, promoting academic rigor and relevance, and preparing students for college and the workplace.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinate and facilitate the work of the Secondary Teaching and Learning team to support schools.
  • Support the Director of Secondary Teaching and Learning in developing, implementing, and evaluating a culturally relevant 6-12 curriculum aligned to Common Core State Standards (CCSS) that meets the diverse needs of the district's student population.
  • Design and deliver high-quality, ongoing professional development for teachers and administrators that is aligned to the district's Professional Learning Framework in collaboration with the Assistant Director of Professional Learning.
  • Monitor implementation of evidence-based intervention programs and Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) frameworks to support struggling learners and accelerate learning
  • Analyze district student assessment data disaggregated by demographics to identify opportunity gaps and focus areas for improvement
  • Collaborate with school leaders to build instructional leadership capacity and ensure consistent, high-quality implementation across all secondary schools
  • Foster a culture of high expectations and oversee coaching of teachers in collaboration with principals
  • Keep apprised of current reform models, assessments, and research on best practices in teaching/learning
  • Provide leadership in Common Core State Standards (CCSS) implementation and standards-based curriculum, instruction, and assessment
  • Monitor implementation of curriculum and instructional practices through classroom visits, support meetings, and consultations in concert with departmental leads
  • Actively use data-driven decision-making strategies to modify and enhance curriculum and instruction
  • Assist principals in the development of appropriate professional learning for faculty and staff
  • Perform other duties as directed by the Director of Secondary Teaching and Learning


QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES OF THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:

  • Prior experience in a system-wide leadership capacity.
  • Demonstrated successful experience working with staff, students, parents and the community in an urban setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a team in an educational setting that sets and achieves high learning standards for staff and students.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the CT Core/Common Core State Standards.
  • Demonstrate ability to successfully implement assessments that improve teaching and learning.
  • Experience and knowledge in the effective development and implementation of curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional learning.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.


CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Connecticut Intermediate Administrative Certification (092) is required.

SALARY AND TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: This is a twelve-month position, and the salary is in accordance with the Hartford Principals' and Supervisors' Association [redacted] Schedule: Group 11: $137,101 - $146,249.
