Work Shifts9:00 A.M - 5:00 P.MDuties & ResponsibilitiesUnder the direction of the Deputy or Associate Director of Nursing, assists with the planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, and evaluating of nursing services. This role ensures that resident care standards are maintained, regulatory compliance is met, and the overall functioning of the nursing department is smooth. When assigned to work off-shifts and weekends, and/or in the absence of the Director of Nursing (DON) and Deputy Director of Nursing (D-DON), assumes responsibility for the operation and functions of the nursing department.
- Assists in developing and implementing the mission, vision, values, philosophy, goals, objectives, policies, and standards for Nursing Service.
- Oversee nursing operations in the absence of the DON and D-DON, ensuring continuity of care and management.
- Directly responsible for the supervision, leadership, and evaluation of the nursing team (including Head Nurses/Charge Nurses, RNs, LPNs, and CNAs), and for coordinating the completion of employee performance evaluations according to established criteria.
- Participates in planning, coordinating, and evaluating nursing services, taking appropriate corrective actions, and communicating relevant information and problems to the Deputy/Associate Director of Nursing.
- Conducts regular meetings with Head Nurses/Charge Nurses and clinical staff, performs unit rounds, manages unit dashboards, observes staff performance according to established criteria, evaluates nursing care practices and procedures, and takes appropriate corrective actions.
- Assesses nursing services by conducting clinical rounds, reviewing charts, and evaluating patient care; participates in the care planning process; and prepares periodic and daily reports on administrative matters related to staff and patient management.
- Ensures comprehensive regulatory compliance for all nursing practices by adhering to federal, state, and local regulations, as well as organizational policies, infection control protocols, patient confidentiality guidelines, and safety protocols, which include active participation in audits, strictly adhering to reporting requirements, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Assists in developing and implementing a staffing plan to ensure the optimal utilization of nursing personnel and is responsible for staffing assigned units. This involves strategically managing staff scheduling and personnel issues to maintain adequate staffing levels. Additionally, collaborates with HR and external agencies to support recruitment efforts and fill open vacancies. In collaboration with the Deputy/Associate Director of Nursing, participates in recruitment, selection, promotion, retention, and placement of nursing personnel.
- Participates in the Performance Improvement Program, utilizing findings to enhance patient care, and contributes to the direction and implementation of a quality assurance program for nursing. Represents Nursing at quarterly Quality Assurance Committee meetings as needed.
- Reviews occurrence reports, conducts investigations, and follows up on patient/resident, family, and/or staff complaints, taking appropriate actions.
- Exhibits strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, effectively resolving staff conflicts, patient complaints, and operational challenges by making informed, timely decisions to ensure patient safety and smooth facility operations in collaboration with the Deputy/Associate Director of Nursing.
- Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to deliver quality patient care, monitor assessments, and care plans. Attend interdisciplinary care plan meetings for assigned units.
- Assists in preparing the personnel, supply, and equipment budget and in monitoring expenditures for the Department of Nursing. Additionally, manages nursing resources and the budget by maintaining optimal inventory and equipment levels, and contributes to cost-effective strategies to ensure the facility is well-equipped.
- Assists in nursing education by planning, organizing, and conducting staff training to enhance clinical skills and procedural knowledge. Provides constructive feedback through performance evaluations and attends mandatory training and other continuing education programs to improve clinical and managerial skills and knowledge.
- Provide essential on-call support for urgent clinical or operational issues when the DON/D-DON is unavailable.
- Assumes other nursing duties as assigned.
- Collaborate with OPCC to serve as a liaison, ensuring participation in defined initiatives, such as but not limited to: shared governance, nursing residency programs, clinical ladder care, and councils and committees as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications1. Licensed and currently registered to practice as a professional nurse in New York State, plus (2) or (3), below.
2. Master's Degree in Nursing Administration, Education, Clinical Specialty or equivalent field and five years of satisfactory nursing experience, of which three years shall have been in a supervisory or teaching capacity; or a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing and six years of satisfactory nursing experience, four years of which shall have been in a supervisory or teaching capacity.
3. A satisfactory equivalent of education and experience. However, all candidates must be licensed and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State.
